Specter fires at Sestak over support of troop increase

In the first high-profile, issue-based confrontation between the two competitors in 2010′s Democratic primary, incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter took the road less traveled – to the left of Rep. Sestak – condemning his support of President Obama’s plans in Afghanistan.

Last night, Sestak quickly came out in support of Obama’s decision to send 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan (which Specter quickly denounced), but does not agree with the President’s deadline to begin removing troops from the region.

The Specter campaign gamely pointed out that Sestak, a sitting congressman from the 7th District (suburban Philadelphia), passionately opposed the timeline for removal of troops in Iraq in 2006, but is now supporting a similar timeline strategy in Afghanistan.

“Of course, Sestak only supported an Iraq timetable when he was a candidate.  Once elected, he voted to fund the Iraq war without a timetable, and now he wants the same kind of open-ended escalating conflict in Afghanistan,” Christopher Nicholas, Senator Specter’s campaign manager, said in a press release. “This is another flip flop from Joe Sestak. He owes voters an explanation why he believes timetables were right for the Iraq war but are now bad for Afghanistan.”
