State legislative panel probes water quality issues related to gas drilling

Pennsylvania must deal with waterways polluted by abandoned coal mines as it determines how to regulate wastewater from natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale formation, state environmental officials told a Senate panel Wednesday.

The hearing before the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee focused in part on a proposed regulation by the Department of Environmental Protection to limit the amount of salty wastewater or dissolved solids discharged into state waterways.
