HARRISBURG — Citizen activist Gene Stilp became well known in 2005 for his vocal opposition to the pay raise that state legislators voted themselves in the dead of night. He then took a 15-foot-high pink pig around the state in a protest against legislators who had voted for it, which helped lead to repeal of the raise.
Now Mr. Stilp, of Taxpayers and Ratepayers United, plans to take his pink pig to Greene County tomorrow to ask Rep. Bill DeWeese, D-Waynesburg, who is facing charges in the Bonusgate scandal, not to run for re-election in the May 18 primary.
Mr. DeWeese, who voted for the pay raise, narrowly survived voter anger in 2006. Now he faces public corruption charges lodged by Attorney General Tom Corbett. Mr. DeWeese has been in the Legislature for 34 years.
