The 1000 state employees whose jobs are secure now that the table games bill has been signed by the governor are breathing easier.  Still, we’re not crazy about the Governor using them as pawns in his battle with the legislature.

The intern vs. Jane Orie story is getting juicer.  Jennifer Knapp Rioja spoke to the Post Gazette and gave them a letter, Orie’s response to her allegations that legislative staff did campaign work for her sister on state time.  Highlights of the letter: it’s revealed that Senator Orie never even met her own intern and her favorites words, used over and over, are “baseless” and “slanderous. ”

Freshman Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper gave herself a B+ for her first year in Congress 0– about what you’d expect.  Then, the Erie Times-News said she deserves even higher marks.  No word yet from Paul Huber…

Pennsylvania Republicans.  Tom Corbett’s never-ending Bonusgate investigation is starting to pay dividends, with seven defendants pleading guilty this week.  Plus, Corbett was able to secure crucial behind-the-scenes party support that he’ll need in a general election, and got Jim Gerlach out of the way.  Now, the popular Gerlach (who endured two consecutive Democratic surges in 2006 and 2008) is back in the race for his own 6th District.  With Republicans Curt Schroder and Steve Welch still in the mix (for now), the situation is tricky, but Gerlach is a proven winner in his tailor-made 6th district.  Next door in the 7th, GOP candidate Pat Meehan is showing impressive fundraising numbers, too.  SEPA Dems beware…

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter finally got some much-needed good news this week when the Daily News reported a significant downturn in violent crime within the city.  Nutter’s critics have become increasingly outspoken in recent months, and his bitter negotiations with SEPTA Union Boss Willie Brown marked a low point in Nutter’s tenure.  Still, moving away from the “Killadelphia” days of old is a very good thing.
