As Mayor Nutter quickly approaches the midpoint of his mayoral term, the 2011 primary election is just around the corner. Eighteen months away, to be exact, and that means it is time for Nutter’s fund-raising operation to kick into gear.
“We support the mayor. We think he is doing a great job in a tough economy,” carpenters’ union chief Ed Coryell Sr. said last week.
The union recently organized a small cocktail reception for Nutter at its Spring Garden Street union hall, and pulled in nearly $85,000, Coryell said.
It was the first fund-raiser the carpenters have held for Nutter since before he became mayor, and only the second “major” event this year for the Nutter campaign.
To be sure, the mayor was hardly a darling of Philadelphia’s labor unions during his 2007 primary run.
