Critz Pulls Off The Upset in PA-12

Aided by strong momentum and support from organized labor over the finals days before the election, Rep. Mark Critz has won the Democratic primary over fellow incumbent Jason Altmire in the redrawn 12th Congressional District.

In a statement announcing his concession, Altmire said, “Congratulations to my colleague Congressman Mark Critz on his hard-fought and well-deserved victory in the primary.  He has my full support as his campaign moves on to the fall.”

With 88% of precincts reporting, Critz was up 52%-48%.  Altmire was expected to come out victorious for much of the campaign, as he cumrrently represents nearly two-thirds of the new district.  All polls had Altmire up by double digits, except for the most recent one last week that showed a four-point advantage for Altmire.

Before any precincts started reporting, the Critz campaign said, “We had a steep mountain to climb. In the last few days, we saw the peak. We’ll see if we reached the mountain top once all of the votes are counted.” It appears they are proudly standing atop that mountain.

Critz carried almost all of Cambria County, where he is based and which he currently represents, along with Somerset County; the campaign was counting on very strong numbers in those two counties to have a chance at beating Altmire.

Altmire carried a good portion of Allegheny and Beaver Counties, where he had won the endorsements of their Democratic Committees, as well as Lawrence County, which did not endorse.  However, it wasn’t enough to hold off Critz’s strong showing.

“The Critz-labor organization had a better ground game and just out-muscled the Altmire campaign,” said Ray Wrabley, a political scientist at the University of Pittsburgh (Johnstown). “Altmire was too complacent about the geography edge. The effectiveness of the Critz operation bodes well for him in the fall race against Keith Rothfus.”

Critz had huge help from the backing of numerous labor groups throughout the district.  Labor’s ground effort “overcame monumental geographics designed by state Republicans to get rid of Critz,” said Tim Waters, national political director for the United Steel Workers. “United Steel Workers activists made 32,345 calls in the last 36 hours and knocked on 5,211 doors in Allegheny, Beaver and Cambria counties. We always said this would be the biggest upset in two decades in the House, and it is.”

Kirk Holman, former Republican official in southwestern Pennsylvania said,

“The fact that Critz could absolutely kill in his area while Altmire was doing well in his area validates the idea that Western Pennsylvania cares very much about geography.”

“The big winner for the evening is organized labor. You had Altmire with the endorsements of the various sclerotic county committees and you had Critz with the significant endorsements of organized labor. The fact is that organized labor could actually get out the vote while county committees could only control their vote which was totally insufficient to be meaningful.”

The Republican nominee for November’s general election is Keith Rothfus, an attorney from Allegheny County.  He is part of the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “Young Guns” program and has been endorsed by Sen. Pat Toomey. Rothfus narrowly lost to Altmire in 2010, and the NRCC will make a strong play to take the district that now leans slightly more Republican.

In a statement after primary results were announced, the NRCC said, “In a district where the President is deeply unpopular, Mark Critz will have to defend his tax and spend record of supporting President Obama’s job destroying economic agenda.  In the 111th Congress Critz voted with Nancy Pelosi 95% of the time and in the 112th Congress he’s voted with Democrat leaders more than 75% of the time. If we learned anything in the primary it was that Critz is more interested in protecting his political career than pursuing a pro-growth agenda that puts Southwestern Pennsylvania first.”

The Pa. AFL-CIO released the following statement:

“The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO would like to congratulate all of the candidates on their hard fought victories today,” said Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Richard Bloomingdale.  “It’s now time to look towards the November election and redouble our efforts to ensure candidates who support working families in Pennsylvania are elected.”

“Everyone is surprised but us in organized labor, and those who know Mark Critz!”  said Pennsylvania AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder.

Pennsylvania unions contributed over 600 volunteers, who knocked on over 10,000 doors, made over 64,000 phone calls and sent over 36,000 pieces of mail.

Keith Rothfus released the following statement:

“I’d like to congratulate Representative Critz on his victory tonight in the Democratic primary, as well as Representative Altmire for his hard-fought race.  I look forward to a spirited discussion in the coming months regarding the direction this country is headed.

The people of Southwestern Pennsylvania will have the opportunity to decide if they believe a top-down, centralized, one-size-fits-all approach with the answers coming from Washington is the direction we want, or if we should empower the people of Southwestern PA – the job creators, the doctors, the mineworkers, the hard-working men and women – to decide what is best for themselves and their families.  I took a six-county tour of the new PA-12 today and will be doing the same tomorrow.  The greatest part of this race for Congress is having the opportunity to meet the people in the PA-12, getting to know them, hearing their stories, and I look forward to continuing that effort in the months to come.”

Election Day Is A Test of Voter ID Law

Tuesday’s primary will serve as a dry-run for the most recent voter ID law that was enacted a little more than a month ago.

The new voter ID law, which was signed into law by Gov. Corbett on March 14, still has numerous tweaks and is being forecasted as a “dress rehearsal” for the November 6 general election. In fact, state officials are still rushing to figure out how to implement the new legislation.

In an article by Newsmax.com, The Philadelphia Inquirer noted that “Tuesday’s election will be like holding a dress rehearsal while the writer is still working on the script.”

This identification law requires that would-be Pennsylvania voters present a photo ID that has an expiration date and is current.

According to an Associated Press story, IDs issued by federal or state governments, such as Pa. driver’s licenses, U.S. passports and military IDs with either an indefinite expiration date, or an expiration date that has not yet passed, are all acceptable. Additionally, identification issued from accredited Pa. colleges and universities, as well as ID issued by elderly care facilities, are all acceptable forms of voter ID.

Romney Makes Final Pa. Primary Campaign Swing

With less than 24 hours remaining until Pennsylvania’s ballot booths open, Mitt Romney’s campaign made sure to hit Pennsylvania’s two major metropolises in a last-minute effort to sway voters. He is seeking to avoid a protest vote among Pa. voters.

Early Monday morning Romney’s campaign made a stop in Pittsburgh, where he attacked President Obama’s energy policies which he believes have lead to higher energy costs.

“[President Obama] is for all the sources of energy that come from above the ground,” Romney claimed.  “Wind and solar.  He just doesn’t like the things that come from below the ground…The course I’ll put us on is to take advantage of what comes from above the ground as well as what comes from below the ground so that American cain finally become energy secure and independent of the oil cartel.”

Not surprisingly, Democratic organizations have issued a few choice words to fight back against the allegations made by the Romney campaign.

Following Romney’s address, the Pennsylvania Democrats issued a press release of their own claiming that the allegations made was a “misleading attack” that only served to “hide his own record of supporting tax breaks for Big Oil.”

“President Obama has enacted an all of the above energy strategy that has spurred domestic oil production to an 8 year high while reducing our dependence on foreign oil,” said Jim Burn, Chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party.  “It’s not surprising that Mitt Romney is launching misleading attacks to hide his horrid record on energy. As Governor, Romney raised a gas tax by 400 percent, and was an outspoken critic of coal-fired power plants, saying that they ‘kill’ people. Now Romney opposes money saving fuel efficiency standards that save Americans money at the pump… Middle class Pennsylvanians cannot afford Mitt Romney’s dishonest campaigning and out of touch energy plans.”

Obama for America Director of Rapid Response Lis Smith echoed Burn’s contentions, saying that Romney’s speech was “filled with distortions and dishonesty about both President Obama’s record and his own.”

“Contrary to Romney’s rhetoric today, President Obama has aggressively pursued an all-of-the-above energy strategy – helping to expand domestic oil production, incentivize research and development for clean coal, nearly double the production of renewable energy, and encourage natural gas production – which has increased every year under President Obama to an all-time high. The real question is what Mitt Romney we’ll see when he shakes his etch-a-sketch on energy- will it be the Mitt Romney who raised a gas tax by 400% and was outspoken in his criticism of coal-fired plants saying that they ‘kill’ people? Or will it be the Mitt Romney who has embraced tax breaks for big oil and gas companies and said that he will eliminate protections against Wall Street speculators manipulating oil prices?”

In addition to his stop in Pittsburgh, Romney made an appearance Monday afternoon outside Philadelphia in Aston (Delaware County), where was joined by Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Rubio, who is widely considered to be possible running mate alongside Romney.  As a Cuban-American, Rubio’s presence on the Republican presidential ticket could potentially help to sway Latino voters.

According to an early report published by the Morning Call, Romney made a special pitch to younger voters, a demographic which he has struggled to retain in the polls.  “I think young people will understand ours is the party of opportunity and jobs,” he claimed, later adding “…By the way…I support extending the temporary relief on interest rates for students as a result of student loans, obviously, and in part because of the extraordinarily poor conditions in the job market.”

Ron Paul Addresses Devoted Supporters Near Independence Hall

As a steady rain fell, presidential hopeful Ron Paul addressed America’s foreign policy issues and protecting personal freedoms, before a boisterous crowd of supporters on Sunday.

Speaking on the lawn of the Independence Mall Visitors Center in Philadelphia’s historic Old City, Paul told the estimated 4,300 rain-battered attendees that his campaign or “revolution” as he calls it, will continue on as long as his loyal base keeps the faith.

“When a campaign starts to fade, two things can happen: one, the money dries up and two, nobody shows up,” said Paul. “But I’ll tell you what, we’re still getting a lot of people showing up in the bad weather and the money bombs are still working.”

As the crowd chanted “President Paul”, the silver-haired representative from Texas was crystal clear in his stance on America’s involvement in the Middle East.

“It is now time to bring the troops home, said Paul. “We have more weapons then everyone else put together, nobody is going to invade us, why do we have to go out looking for dragons to slay?”

In Paul’s estimation, the enemy that poses the biggest threat to our liberty is not a foreign one, but domestic. The loudest cheer of the afternoon came when he reiterated his campaign-trail promise of ending the Federal Reserve and cutting other wasteful government spending.

“Even on the Republican side of the aisle there is a proposal to balance the budget in 30 years,” said Paul as the crowd enthusiastically booed. “My proposal is to cut $1trillion my first year in office.”

However, the main clout of Paul’s speech was reserved for the government encroaching on personal freedom. His willingness to stand behind even the more controversial issues of personal liberty, like drug legalization, is a huge reason that Paul enjoys the devoted following that he does.

“The “War on Drugs” has been much more dangerous than the drugs themselves,” Paul said.

Paul has a particularly strong pull with younger voters, who turned out in droves to see their candidate on Sunday.

“I came out here to show my support for Ron Paul,” said Travis Belcher, a student at Bucks County Community College. “He’s the only candidate that truly believes in the constitution.”

Pointing to the internet as the greatest resource for the “truth”, Paul warned that the internet will continue to face legislation like the highly publicized SOPA and PIPA bills that aimed to implement government restrictions on surfing the web.

“The third amendment was written to protect our privacy and that if you have an approved society then you should have open government,” said Paul. Now we have a secret government and we have no privacy left, we need to reverse that.”

Despite the weather, many supporters continued to hang around long after Paul had finished his remarks, talking excitedly amongst themselves and waiting for the chance to catch a glimpse of their man as he was ushered into his black SUV.

“He’s the only one that understands that there is difference between freedom and democracy, and our country is based on freedom, not democracy,” Erol Surmodley. “I have a wife and daughter that I would like to see grow up in a free and safe country; he’s quite frankly our only option to do so in the long term.”

Ron Paul may trail far behind presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney in the delegate count, but Paul supporters refuse to let the naysayers rain on their parade.

“This is our fight for freedom, this is our time, we have to do this,” said Megan Shaner.

After Ceasefire, Cartwright Releases Final Ad (Watch Video)

Democratic Congressional candidate Matt Cartwright and PA-17 challenger released his final campaign ad Thursday, all positive.

Coming on the heels of several attack ads against PA-17 incumbent Tim Holden released by PACs, such as The Campaign for Primary Accountability and The League of Conservation Voters, this upbeat, positive TV spot emphasizes the notion that Cartwright hasn’t had to resort to mudslinging. Arguably, Cartwright has lucked out as outside organizations have done his dirty work.

In the commercial, the narrator says that Cartwright will fight corporate greed and oppose tax cuts established by the Bush Administration.

“Matt can work to make childcare and elderly care completely tax deductable,” says the narrator. “And Matt will work with Senator Casey to close the Halliburton Loophole.”

It is also interesting to note that, perhaps as a method of neutralizing the fact that Sen. Casey has already endorsed Holden, the video’s producers featured a still image of Casey and Cartwright.

The ad is bookended by staged interviews of Cartwright and his wife.

“Matt is a hard worker. He’s very dedicated,” Cartwright’s wife says. “He’s passionate…good looking.”

While the “politician-at-home” style interview has been used in campaigns for years, the playful banter echoes the Cartwright camp’s positive, cheery campaign strategy —taking advantage of PAC and other organizations negative commercials.

In fact, the barrage of negative ads lead Rep. Holden to call for a ceasefire on Thursday.

Unfortunately for Holden, however, the slew of attack ads that he’s already sustained may have already made a damaging impact.

Murphy and Kane Trade Western Pennsylvania Endorsements

Auditor General Jack Wagner, whose home turf is in western Pennsylvania where the Attorney General primary will likely be won or lost, endorsed Kathleen Kane this afternoon. Patrick Murphy picked up the endorsement of Armstrong County District Attorney Scott Andreassi and Sheriff Larry Crawford. Murphy also announced a rally hosted by Pittsburgh City Councilman Bill Peduto. The two main Philadelphia newspapers endorsed Kane while the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette endorsed Murphy.

The Kane campaign said that the Wagner endorsement was further proof that the momentum has shifted in her favor. The campaign said, “[the endorsement] comes within a week of the momentum-shifting endorsement of Kane by President Bill Clinton, as well as the editorial board endorsements of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News. In response to Kathleen Kane’s surge, the campaign of former Congressman Patrick Murphy has launched two false, negative and misleading TV ads against her within the past week.”

Wagner made the endorsement official at an event in downtown Pittsburgh.

DA Andreassi said of Murphy, “An Iraq war veteran who has prosecuted terrorists overseas and put dangerous criminals behind bars here at home, Patrick Murphy is a dedicated public servant who has been tested under the most difficult circumstances. Patrick is a proven leader with the experience and determination to keep our families safe. I know that he will be the partner we need in the Attorney General’s office and I look forward to working with him to fight crime here in Armstrong County.”

DA Andreassi made note of Murphy’s prosecution experience which the Kane camp has used as a point of contention saying that Patrick Murphy has never tried a case in the commonwealth of Pa. Patrick Murphy recently released an ad which chronicled the prosecution experience he has.

Councilman Peduto said that Murphy, “has proven that he has both progressive values and the courage to back them up. He’s demonstrated a willingness to take a stand on issues that matter to us – even in the face of daunting opposition.”

Fitzpatrick Member of Planned Parenthood “Toxic Ten”

In their continued effort to influence the 2012 primary season, the Planned Parenthood political action fund “Women are Watching” released a list of their “toxic ten” members of congress who have ardently supported legislature to cut federal family planning grants.

On the list is Bucks County representative Mike Fitzpatrick who voted for the Pence Amendment to slash funding to Planned Parenthood by $363 million, which passed through the House before dying in the Senate back in 2011.

This well aimed jab at Fitzpatrick from Planned Parenthood, hits on one of the most polarizing social issues of the campaign season and is already proving to be a particularly contentious point between Fitzpatrick and Democratic challenger Kathy Boockvar.

The Fitzpatrick campaign calls this the work of a “the liberal smear machine,” bent on refocusing the voters attention away from more pressing economic issues.

“Liberals and their hacks are hopelessly trying every hackneyed trick in the book to misdirect voters from their failed policies which have stalled our recovery and put America’s future at risk,” said Fitzpatrick campaign representative, Faith Bender. “The real issue for women is putting our country back on the right track.”

However, Fitzpatrick’s opponent Kathy Boockvar sees things differently. Calling herself a “tireless and vocal advocate for women,” she hammered Fitzpatrick for being disconnected from his constituents’ priorities.

“Congressman Fitzpatrick has voted repeatedly with the Tea Party to deny critical healthcare services for the millions of American women and men who rely on those services, said Kathy Boockvar.  “These votes, and his votes against women, seniors, and middle class Americans are unconscionable and callous, and represent everything that is wrong with Congress’s priorities, and with Washington.”

The timely reminder of Fitzpatrick’s voting record from Planned Parenthood is part of the organizations recent concentrated push to swing their political weight on women’s health issues. They also just announced that they will be pouring $100,000 into running an advertisement campaign charging Republican state House hopeful Ryan Mackenzie with supporting the controversial, and currently flagging, ultrasound bill.

Campaign for Primary Accountability Launches Another Ad Against Holden

The Campaign for Primary Accountability (C4PA) attacked Tim Holden in a new television spot, portraying the PA-17 Congressman as a Blue Dog Democrat and politician under Wall Street’s control.

The League of Conservation Voters spent $230,000 on an oil-related commercial earlier this week, while CP4A launched a $70,000 ad about cozying up to Wall Street interests at the beginning of April.

“Two candidates. One, true blue Democrat,” says the narrator in the C4PA’s most recent spot. “That’s Matt Cartwright. Matt Cartwright will stand up for the middle class and stand up to big banks and Wall Street.”

The narrator goes on to say that Holden has many Democrats “seeing red.”

“Holden event voted with George Bush to cut taxes for the top 1 percent,” says the narrator.

According to the Holden organization, this is just another example of the negative political action that has already helped challenger Cartwright.

“It’s another example of out-of-state millionaires helping millionaire Matt Cartwright,” Campaign Manager Eric Nagy said. “For a guy who’s supposedly opposed to negative advertising, Cartwright has been reaping the benefits of these attacks. Now they have one that uses his name.”

For Cartwright, this recent bombardment of negative, PAC-funded attack ads have meant that he can highlight the positive sides of his platform, rather than turning the his race against Holden into a contest based upon character attacks, manipulation and mudslinging.

In fact, a spokesperson for C4PA has even gone on record and said that they will spend “whatever it take to get the job done.”

The Holden camp is certainly aware of this trend.

“We call on Matt Cartwright to tell them to take this ad down,” said Nagy in a conversation with PoliticsPA.

While C4PA would not comment on the size of their latest buy, their new anti-Holden ad will run in rotation with the one their released earlier this week.
