Biden Steps Aside, Endorses Harris For President

President Joe Biden, VP Kamala Harris

For the first time in 56 years, a sitting president has chosen not to run for reelection.

President Joe Biden stepped aside from the top of the Democratic ticket on Sunday afternoon, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to take his spot.

Here is Biden’s statement.

My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best… pic.twitter.com/x8DnvuImJV

Harris thanked Biden for his leadership and service to the country.

On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country.

I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination.

Former President Barack Obama called Biden a “patriot of the highest order.”

Joe Biden has been one of America’s most consequential presidents, as well as a dear friend and partner to me. Today, we’ve also been reminded – again – that he’s a patriot of the highest order.

  1. The past 30 days in American politics have been extraordinary. We are living in a historical moment.

  2. Ok folks, it’s time to correct the mistake that was made in 2016. 2024 must be the end of Donald Trump’s political hold on this country. His supporters need to move on and the Republican Party needs to get back to its roots and away from divisive policies.
