“It takes two, baby, it takes two, just me and you.”

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump agreed to hold two campaign debates with the first slated for the end of June.

Biden and Trump will debate in Atlanta in an event hosted by CNN on June 27, while the second debate is scheduled to be hosted by ABC News on September 10.

The events came together quickly on Wednesday, after Biden fired the first salvo at the former occupant of the White House.

Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate.

Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again.

Not to be outdone, Trump responded on social media as well.

The eagerness of both campaigns to sign onto the matchups reflects their confidence that their candidate can get the better of the other in a head-to-head showdown.

Biden had previously announced that he would not participate in the traditional fall presidential debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates – a group that was formed in 1987 to smooth arguments over moderators and rules, to name a few.

In fact, the agreement between the campaigns does not ensure that either of the debates will happen.

“Donald Trump has a long history of playing games with debates: complaining about the rules, breaking those rules, pulling out at the last minute, or not showing up at all – which he’s done repeatedly in all three cycles he’s run for president,” said Jen O’Malley Dillon, Biden-Harris 2024 Chair.”

“He said he would debate President Biden anytime, anywhere, anyplace. In fact, he’s said and posted it dozens of times with varying degrees of comprehension and basic grammar. President Biden made his terms clear for two one-on-one debates, and Donald Trump accepted those terms. No more games. No more chaos, no more debate about debates. We’ll see Donald Trump on June 27th in Atlanta – if he shows up.”

A surrogate of Biden, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro deferred when asked what advice he would have for the president, should he be asked.

“The President doesn’t need my advice,” said Shapiro. “He’ll be well prepared for that debate.

“I think the country deserves to hear a debate between the two. There is such a clear contrast between the President and Donald Trump. And I look forward to hearing the President tout the many important investments that he’s made here in Pennsylvania and across the country and his plans for the future.”
