Bizzarro Announces Run For State Treasurer

Ryan Bizzarro

Rep. Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie) announced this morning that he is a candidate for state treasurer.

In an announcement video, Bizzarro accused the current treasurer Stacy Garrity of being Pennsylvania’s highest-ranking extremist office holder,” seeking to tie the Republican incumbent to two issues – reproductive rights and the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“I’m running for State Treasurer to protect taxpayer assets, protect pensions, to protect you from Stacy Garrity,” he says.

Campaigns for a lower-profile office like state treasurer — where the duties include managing the government’s cash flow, not setting policy — have tended to fly under voters’ radars. But in a battleground state like Pennsylvania, where the presidency and a U.S. Senate seat will be fiercely contested in 2024, down-ballot races can also take on intense partisanship over issues with little connection to an official’s duties.

“Stacy Garrity told us she would hold Harrisburg accountable. Instead she uses Harrisburg as a platform spreading lies and promoting extreme agendas,” he continues, explaining that he considers Garrity among the “Who’s Who of super spreaders of the Big Lie.”

“Politicians aren’t always looking out for YOU – and government isn’t always helping. That’s why I entered public service,” his website reads. “It’s why I fight so hard for Pennsylvanians — and why I am running for State Treasurer.”

His priorities include “keeping our state on a solid financial footing … to maintain a good statewide credit score that allows us to make vital infrastructure investments. New roads, bridges, clean water, schools, and so much more all require capital funding to move Pennsylvania forward. The state treasurer chooses how to invest and grow billions of dollars of our money.”

Bizzarro is a lifelong resident of Erie County who graduated from Edinboro University with degrees in political science and criminal justice, and from Gannon University with a master’s degree in public administration.

The 37-year-old serves as chair of the House Democratic Policy Committee.

  1. Ryan is a strong candidate and gets things done in a bipartisan way. That is shown by his big wins in a not so easy district. He will be a formidable challenger against Garrity.
