Brady Backs Schwartz

One of Pennsylvania’s most influential Democrats is backing Allyson Schwartz for Governor in what is perhaps the biggest endorsement of the race to date.

U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, who also chairs the Philadelphia City Democratic Committee, endorsed Schwartz on Thursday.

“I have gotten the opportunity to work with Allyson for almost ten years in Washington,” Brady said. “There is no one who is more effective at fighting for Pennsylvania families. As Governor, she will bring that record of accomplishment and effective leadership to our Commonwealth. Allyson is smart, tough and principled. I am proud to strongly support her for Governor.”

Brady and Schwartz have served in the House of Representatives since she was first elected in 2004. They also represent neighboring districts in Philadelphia and the surrounding area.

The endorsement came within hours of a decision by state Sen. Mike Stack (D-Phila) to run for Lt. Governor instead of Governor.

Brady had been Stack’s biggest supporter, and the switch indicates some sort of deal.

“I have worked closely with Bob Brady on behalf of Philadelphia and the region, and I’m very proud to have his support,” Schwartz said. “Bob’s deep commitment to Philadelphia is demonstrated by his standing up for our city’s working men and women time and time again. In Congress, he is leading the way on voting rights protections, a critical issue here in Pennsylvania.”

The endorsement of Rep. Brady helps shore up Schwartz’s support in Philadelphia and Southeast Pennsylvania.

Other candidates for Governor include former DEP Secretaries John Hanger and Katie McGinty, State Treasurer Rob McCord, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, and former Department of Revenue Secretary Tom Wolf.

  1. Corbett is hoping Schwartz will be the Dem candidate. Forget any polls, she is the weakest Dem against Corbett. Furthermore, she will not have the liberal base—they don’t like her. Other candidates would be FAR better!!!! Corbett’s chances are improving.

  2. I think all the comments point to the fact that this is all about the money. Schwartz can pay the retail price of what is costs to do business in Philadelphia. If its Philly, its all about the money. If its West Pa, its all about who is not the most liberal.

  3. If McCord is willing to pay Brady and the Philly Dems. more money than Allison does then he has a shot at it too. If Allison is willing to leave D.C. long enough to put her walking shoes on and mix it up state wide with the rank and file , then maybe she has a shot also. You cant be an absentee candidate and rely on the endorsements of party leaders to win this race. People outside of the S.E. never heard of her and would not know her if she stepped on them. Remember folks the real endorsements come from the voters!

  4. chet i think the most powerful democrat in philly is no negative he will raise alot of money for her.and i live in western pa and she has alot of support here also i think its time for a women governor.

  5. I think this could be a negative. Brady will not deliver one primary vote in philly that she was not going to get before. And for the western pa dems, this is a double down of the fact Schwartz is a candidate of the city of the first class; and that will not play.

  6. wow thats huge and really hurts mccords chances now all schwartz needs is allegheny county and its over.
