Butkovitz Drops Out of State Treasurer Contest

Alan Butkovitz

Former state representative Alan Butkovitz has dropped out of the Democratic Party race for State Treasurer in 2024.

Butkovitz, who most recently served as Philadelphia city controller, cited his late-November heart attack as the reason for departing the contest.

“While I have made tremendous progress in recovery, this comes at a critical point in the political calendar,” he said in a statement. “Running this campaign and meeting Democrats throughout this Commonwealth has been an honor and a privilege, and I am very grateful for all the support and encouragement I have received.

“I ask for your understanding during this challenging time for me and my family, and I appreciate your support as I prioritize my health and well-being.”

The 71-year-old Butkovitz was a member of the Pennsylvania House from 1991 to 2005 and served as city controller in Philly from 2006-18.

Rep. Ryan Bizzarro (D-Erie), one of the two remaining Democrats in search of the nomination, tweeted, “Please join my team and me in praying for Alan’s speedy recovery — we Democrats need his strong voice motivating us for 2024.”

Bizzarro and former small business owner Erin McClelland are vying for a spot opposite incumbent Republican Stacy Garrity on the November 2024 general election ballot.
