Casey and Toomey Vote Against Dismissing Trump Impeachment Trial

On Tuesday, Sens. Bob Casey and Pat Toomey voted against the effort to dismiss former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial

While all Democrats were united in opposing the effort to dismiss the second impeachment trial, Toomey was one of five Republicans to side against the GOP backed effort to dismiss the trial.

“There are legal and constitutional arguments both favoring and opposing an impeachment trial of a former president,” Toomey said in a statement following his vote.

“In my view, the text and context of the Constitution, the meaning of the term ‘impeachment’ to the founders, and the most relevant precedents indicate that it is constitutionally permissible for the Senate to consider the impeachment of President Trump,” Toomey continued. “When President Trump’s impeachment trial begins on February 9th, I will again fulfill my responsibility to consider the arguments made by his lawyers and the House managers.”

On January 13, the House voted 232-197 to impeach Trump, charging him with “incitement of insurrection” over the riots that took place at the Capitol building in Washington D.C. on January 6, following a rally led by Trump. Pennsylvania’s 18 member Congressional delegation fell entirely along party lines during the House impeachment vote – All 9 members of Pennsylvania’s Democratic delegation voted to impeach Trump, while all 9 Republicans voted against it.

Following the January 6 riots at the Capitol building, Casey called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office, while Toomey urged Trump to resign.

Casey has publicly voiced support for the Senate to convict Trump. Toomey did not answer questions on whether he’s made his mind up about convicting Trump or not, according to the Morning Call.

  1. I supported Toomey back in 2004, when he ran in the Republican primary against Specter, and ever since.

Now Toomey has BECOME Specter. And I do not support RINOs.

  2. Logic tells you if you could not impeach once a person was out of office then every scoundrel in a public office would wait till the last month or two and do their “up to no good” activities. Of course, convictions following an impeachment can be happening once a person is out of office. But all of this misses the point. Look at our great leaders Gov Bill Scranton or Gov Tom Ridge or Gov Casey or Gov Thornburgh—people like this would never be impeached for anything. Trump was all wrong for the office of President and he totally lacked the talent for the job. The Trump era is over but the impact of it still lingers in our politics.

      1. Actually, a rotten fart is much better than Trump or any member of the Trump family.

  3. Only because they know it is unconstitutional. How can you impeach someone who is no longer in office???

    1. Did you notice that the impeachment was filed BEFORE the orange monkey left office? So you favor doing nothing for inciting sedition against democracy, as long as you get out of office soon after?
