What a treat. Sen. Bob Casey’s campaign emailed a fundraising appeal to supporters Tuesday, written by Democratic pundit and political consultant James Carville.
“…Do me a favor,” Carville writes. “No, scratch that. Do yourself a favor. If the issues Bob Casey’s fighting for are as personal to you as they are to me, please make a generous contribution to Bob Casey’s re-election campaign today.”
In it, Carville mentions his Pennsylvania ties – he consulted Bob Casey Sr.’s gubernatorial bid. He also ran the successful underdog Senate race of Harris Woffard against former Governor Dick Thornburg. It was then that he describe Pennsylvania as, “Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between.”
“[Republicans] want a candidate who can pay for his or her own campaign with a private fortune,” says Carville of the GOP Senate candidates, “making an end run out of such hassles as campaign-finance laws and guaranteeing a nominee with the monetary chops to spend millions of dollars attacking Bob Casey.”
Casey had about $3.75 million cash on hand as of the most recent campaign finance report. His nearest Republican opponent, coal industry veteran and former tea party leader Tom Smith, reported about $730,000 on hand last quarter.
