Casey, Toomey: Suspend Aid to Egypt

Both of Pennsylvania’s Senators, Democrat Bob Casey and Republican Pat Toomey, have each called on the Obama Administration to suspend aid to Egypt in the last few days.

“The situation with Egypt is disturbing. We are now seeing a low-grade civil war between the military and the Islamists,” Senator Toomey asserted in his statement. “The Egyptian military crossed the line last week. We should stop giving foreign aid to Egypt and its military unless the country moves toward an inclusive democratic system. American taxpayers should not contribute to a military that slaughters civilians in the street.”

A few hours later, Senator Casey issued a similar statement calling for the suspension of aid.

“Based on the abhorrent violence seen over the past week and a stalled return to a democratic process, the U.S. should suspend assistance to Egypt,” Casey said. “Simply put, the U.S. cannot be complicit in providing arms to a military that kills hundreds of its own people. Our top priority should be protecting U.S. national security and economic interests.”

Later, in an interview with the Morning Call, Sen. Casey said support should be re-evaluated only after the violence is stopped and a plan for fair elections is agreed to.

The controversy comes in the wake of the bloodshed unleashed by the current military-controlled government which is attempting to stymie the Muslim Brotherhood, whose Democratically elected President ruled the nation before the military ousted him in July.

The United States has provided billions of dollars, mostly in the form of military aid, to Egypt ever since the Camp David Accords in 1978. Reports have surfaced that the Obama Administration is mulling over whether to halt assistance, yet there is also fear that such a move would remove any leverage the U.S. still has in the region.
