UPDATE: Beiler Campaign Manger Dan Davis said the candidate would not remove the ad, saying Cawley’s call to do so is a distraction.

“Sounds like a typical Philadelphia lawyer to me,” Davis said of the request.

He pointed out that Beiler is far from the only candidate criticizing Cawley, a fact the Bucks County commissioner himself has noted in previous interviews with PoliticsPA.

The GOP race for lieutenant governor has, in fact, become a heated affair that, while not attracting attention from casual observers, is said to be drawing increases attention from conservative activists and party officials. Thus far, it’s difficult to tell who will emerge from the nine-candidate field.

The Cawley campaign seems intent on pushing back at the cricism. In a statement to PoliticsPA, Cawley campaign senior adviser Vince Galko hit Beiler over a past criminal incident. As chairman of the Lancaster County Republican Committee at the start of this decade, Beiler faced a misdemeanor charge connected to illegally soliciting voter-registration forms in exchange for small amounts of money. The controversy was known as “Votergate.”

“We all hoped that Chet Beiler’s criminal conviction and his time in the criminal justice system would have rehabilitated him,” said Cawley campaign senior adviser Vince Galko. “Unfortunately, it appears that Chet has returned to his dishonest and unethical ways.”

Davis declined to comment when asked about the charges.

The Lancaster County man’s campaign also debuted a statewide radio spot this week.

A lawyer for GOP Lieutenant Governor candidate Jim Cawley has written to primary foe Chet Beiler asking him to take down a campaign ad critical of the Bucks County commissioner, saying its use of an actress creates a false impression in the minds of viewers.

The dispute centers on a spot that begain airing this week from the Beiler campaign, which features a woman saying Cawley raised her taxes when he was a Bucks County commissioner. Capitolwire reported Wednesday morning that the woman in the was in fact a paid actress.

The letter says the fact that she was an actress means all of her statements are deliberately false.

“Your continued dissemination of this video … taints the election process and insults the electors of the commonwealth by creating an intentionally and deliberately false impression in an effort to secure your selfish political motives, for which you may be liable,” said the letter from the Cawley campaign’s lawyer, John McBlain. “Your conduct is not befitting a candidate for state office and you do not deserve the trust of the electorate.”

A senior Cawley adviser said the campaign is also asking the television stations running the ad to take it down.

The nine-candidate Republican lieutenant governor primary has been particularly heated in recent months, with most of the barbs aimed at Cawley, the GOP’s endorsed candidate. Critics say he is the product of the party machine and not a true conservative.

  1. At the SW Caucus breakfast at the State Committee meeting last February, Jim Cawley proudly professed to being a “progressive” which means he is a liberal. Other “progressives” are FDR, Woodrow Wilson, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, the Congressional Black Caucus, Barack Obama and other liberal democrats.

Check the PA Dept. of State campaign reporting, He has received large donations from Unions.

He has told Planned Parenthood he is willing to discuss funding using taxpayer money.

So much of the mailer is true. Oh, even though he says he is pro-2nd amendment he is refusing to commit in writing to getting the gun ban repealed in Bucks County Parks. So people in Bucks County can carry in National Parks and State Parks but not in their county parks.
