The contest for chair of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania is over before it even began.
Ted Christian, the former state director for Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, announced in statement on Thursday night that he would not continue his bid for party chair.
Christian had the financial backing of Bucks County venture capitalist Paul Martino but has opted to step aside and give his endorsement to Cumberland County state Sen. Greg Rothman.
“I have decided I will not continue running to be Chairman of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania,” he wrote. “I will be supporting my friend, Greg Rothman, and look forward to supporting the Party in new ways moving forward.”
In turn, Rothman tweeted “My friend Ted Christian is a leader and a Patriot. He will continue to be a valuable part of the @PAGOP. I am grateful for his support and look forward to his counsel and help in making PA a permanent RED state.”
Rothman had the powerful support of U.S. Senator-elect Dave McCormick, as well as State Treasurer Stacy Garrity for the position.
This is an historic moment for the commonwealth and the country.
I believe @wgregrothman would be an outstanding chair of the @PAGOP!

Martino told the Philadelphia Inquirer in a statement he was disappointed by the news and continues to believe Christian “is the right guy for the job.”
“It is clear who runs the GOP in PA now — and that’s Dave McCormick,” he added.
