Club for Growth: No Plans for PA-18

The Club for Growth isn’t planning to funnel any more spending into the 18th district primary, the group’s president said Tuesday. The conservative organization had previously criticized incumbent Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Allegheny), who faces a challenge from Evan Feinberg.

It comes down to money. While Murphy boasted about a million dollars on hand at the start of the year, Feinberg had just $40,000. Neither campaign has released its fundraising figures from the first quarter of 2011.

Reports Cameron Joseph of The Hill:

“We continue to watch [the race], but we’re not doing anything now,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola.

“There have to be a lot of dynamics in place for us to get involved in a race. Feinberg hasn’t raised much money,” Chocola said. “We don’t mind being one of the larger financial supporters of a candidate but we don’t want to be their finance committee. We think he’s great on the issues but you have to be viable.”

The group rang in the new year by spending about $50,000 on TV ads criticizing Murphy.

Murphy earned a 69 percent rating in their most recent scorecard, far from flying colors but second highest among Republican Congressmen from Pa.

But Feinberg won’t be left alone. The Campaign for Primary Accountability is still spending in the district to criticize Murphy: about $20K on TV, $20K on radio, and $10K online in the past few days.

The Democratic candidate is Washington County Commissioner Larry Maggi.
