Com Director’s Corner: GOP State Committee

By Valerie Caras, PA GOP Communications Director

The Republican Party of Pennsylvania is still flying high from the historic Republican victories that we enjoyed last fall. Our Party members and volunteers are motivated and enthusiastic heading into the 2011 election cycle. For us, there is no such thing as an “off-year” election as the elected positions on the ballot this year have very direct impacts on the everyday life of Pennsylvanians.

In 2011, there are six judges up for retention on Pennsylvania’s appellate courts, as well as two open judicial seats – one on the Superior Court, and one on the Commonwealth Court. We are focused on supporting principled Republican candidates for each of these positions who will pledge to uphold the principles that make our Commonwealth a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

One of the first steps that we take in preparation for these important judicial races is to hold our annual Winter Meeting of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania on February 11th and 12th in Harrisburg. The PA GOP holds three meetings each year to facilitate discussion amongst grassroots Party members from throughout our Commonwealth and to prepare and train activists for upcoming campaigns.  PA GOP members, who are elected from each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, represent the Republican electorate in their county on the statewide level

This year’s Winter Meeting begins on Friday, February 11th where we will hold numerous traiing sessions and forums for party members, activists, and staff members, including voter registration workshops and a judicial candidates forum. That evening we will celebrate our annual Lincoln Day Dinner featuring keynote speaker U.S. Representative Pete Sessions (R-TX) who also serves as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The general meeting of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania will be held the following morning on Saturday, February 12th. PA GOP members will hear updates from elected officials, including Governor Tom Corbett, Senator Pat Toomey, as well as from Congressman Bill Shuster (R-PA) who will provide a report from Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation.

During this meeting, PA GOP Members will also consider the important question of whether or not to endorse Republican candidates running for statewide office. Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason has been a strong supporter of openness and transparency in our procedures and has ensured that each member has a voice during this important process. If members choose to endorse, the PA GOP will be active through the primary to support the endorsed candidate or candidates. If members chooses not to endorse, the PA GOP will act as a neutral agent through the primary and will support the Republican victors after the primary election.

We are excited about our Winter Meeting,  not only to move forward with our 2011 campaigns, but also to reunite many of the Party members that worked so hard to make Pennsylvania a red state last November.  It will certainly be exciting to hear Tom Corbett and Pat Toomey speak; this time not as candidates, but as elected officials.
