Cook Political Report Shifts PA-6 to Lean Republican

Cook Report ChangeCook Political Report is shifting 10 races nationally in favor of Democrats.

The only Pennsylvania race they shifted is Congressman Ryan Costello’s 6th district.  Cook shifted the race from ‘likely Republican’ to ‘lean Republican.’

“[W]hile Hillary Clinton carried his district, he also had the good fortune of running against a Democrat allergic to fundraising,” the report said.

So far, only one Democrat has entered the race, Chrissy Houlahan.  Houlahan has been gaining national recognition from Democrats, and showcased a strong fundraising quarter raising over $432,000 in the second quarter.

“Chrissy Houlahan’s strong candidacy, coupled with Costello’s committee vote for the Republican repeal bill, make Costello ripe for replacement,” Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman Evan Lukaske said in a statement about the rating change.

In 2016, Clinton won the district by 0.6 percent, while Costello won his seat by 14.48 points.

Update: Costello’s campaign pushed back that Houlahan’s ties to national Democrats will hurt her in the district, and Costello’s organization within the district.

“There is no question Nancy Pelosi is eager to get her hands on PA6 so she can return as Speaker of the House. Voters in this district know better. They do not want to embrace the far left Pelosi agenda of socialized medicine, higher taxes, less security and bigger government, which is what they’ll get with Ms. Houlahan. We have a strong organization, resources and the best candidate all of which will translate to victory next November,” Costello campaign senior adviser Vincent Galko said in an email.

  1. Costello will win his face but it might be close. A better bet is the 8th but only if Ds turn out in record numbers. The 7th is the easiest to predict. Meehan will win easily.

  2. This is why Pelosi is such a drag on the challengers…its like a pavlov dog response to many voters..
the playbook keeps working and the Dems wont dump Pelosi!! Frustrating ..

    1. Pelosi is 78. They should give her a big going away party and wish her well. The only ones that would be sad to see her go are Republicans who have their commercials ready- Do you want Nancy Pelosi to be Speaker again? That would re-elect most Republicans in Congress.

  3. The dems keep running far left candidates in this district and then wonder why the loose. They really should do some research on candidates.this district has a split personality and it favors R as a result.

    1. That’s because the 6th was emasculated so that it would favor Rs. The coup de grace was putting Reading within the 16th.

  4. This dem is far left of this district, she is supported by leftist extremes like emilys list- you may remember Wendy Sherman who along with Kerry and Obama sold out our Nation to Iran and in ShermANs case helped negotiate the great nuclear deal with North Korea- still if she is alternative to a hack like Costello- why not. I”d hate to see dems take House but it would be so grand to see the FOUR STOOGES-MEAHAN, FITZPATRICK , COSTELLO AND WONDER BOY CHARLIE DENT HAVE TO WORK FOR A LIVING. BYE BYE RYAN-IT AINT SO BAD TO SEE YOU GO?

    1. Sold out our nation to Iran?

You mean the deal that stopped Iran’s nuclear weapons program? The only ones who got “sold out” in that deal were the “Bomb-Bomb Iran” warmongers and military profiteers.

Let’s not forget, that the US meddled in Iran in the 50’s to replace the democratically elected leader with the dictator Shah, leading to Ayatollah Khomeini and resentment of the US.

      1. All those billions in cash to Iran should have told you all you needed to know about that awful deal plus the fact that there was a filibuster in the Senate to prevent a vote on the deal. It will prove to be the biggest mistake of the Obama Administration.

    2. Dude, this is the 21st century. Supporting a woman’s right to choose doesn’t make someone a “leftist extremist.”

  5. And Malibu Brian in the 8th district has no opponent. Go figure. Or is it because Fitzpatrick is really a democrat.

  6. All the NRCC can say in response is some gibberish about Pelosi? SAD.

      1. Who’s going to win if Pelosi is still the “star?” Why come up with anything else? Dems make so easy.

  7. Comments like this by the DCCC are funny. They know the legislative process and that bills change from the time they go through committee until they hit the floor. I bet they don’t mention that Costello voted against the bill when it came up on the floor for a vote. While this race looks like it will indeed be exciting, it is farrrrrrrrr to early to be talking like this.
