UPDATED: Corbett Officially Endorses Romney

UPDATED: Governor Tom Corbett made his endorsement of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney official on Tuesday afternoon, according to a statement released by Romney’s presidential campaign.

“Now that the long primary season has ended, it is time for Republicans to come together and unite around the one candidate who can defeat Barack Obama and institute a bold conservative vision that we need in Washington,” Corbett said in the statement. “That is why I am heartily endorsing Mitt Romney. Our country needs a president who will reverse President Obama’s failed policies and ensure an opportunity for all Americans to prosper. Mitt Romney will restore fiscal sanity to Washington by cutting spending, lowering taxes, and reforming entitlements.”

“I’m extraordinarily proud to earn Tom’s support,” Romney said. “Tom has been a wonderful leader for Pennsylvania and shares my values of spurring economic security through scaling back the size of government and promoting pro-growth policies. There is no doubt that Pennsylvania will be a crucial state in November. With Tom’s help, I know that I will be able to share my vision of restoring American greatness to Pennsylvania voters.”

Governor Tom Corbett will endorse Mitt Romney today, PoliticPA has learned.

Two sources close to the Governor say the presumptive GOP presidential nominee is having a private fundraiser this afternoon in Harrisburg which Corbett plans to attend. There, he will make his support official.

Romney is on a campaign swing through the Keystone State today. He had an event earlier in the Pittsburgh suburbs, and after the fundraiser in Harrisburg will give the keynote address at the Lancaster County GOP Dinner.

Corbett’s move hardly a surprise. Since Rick Santorum left the race last week, Republican party leaders nationwide have lined up behind Romney. Sen. Pat Toomey, for example, endorsed the former Massachusetts Governor within hours of Santorum’s announcement.

Romney enjoyed the support of much of the GOP establishment in PA even before last week.

  1. Late as usual. You would think old Tom would have done this way back when as they are so similar. Romney is probably a lot smarter but they are still the same. Big government guys.
