It’s all on the line for Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) today as the 119th Congress is sworn in at noon.
At stake is his speakership.
Conservative hardliners, including Rep. Scott Perry (R-10), are revolting against the Louisiana lawmaker. Johnson has a single-digit majority, but Perry and nearly a dozen others have publicly questioned whether he deserves to remain speaker.
They have aired grievances about Johnson while also laying out the process reforms they want enacted, including assurances on spending cuts. Hardliners are also telling the speaker that they want Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) appointed as chair of the Rules Committee, which controls what legislation gets on the floor and how it is considered.
President-elect Donald Trump has been lobbying Roy on Johnson’s behalf, but it may not be enough.
And remember, even yielding a little to conservatives is risky for Johnson as he could lose the trust with the middle.
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is a definite “no” vote against Johnson. That puts Perry and the others in the spotlight. If just one of them votes with Massie for another candidate, Johnson cannot win.
That will create new headaches for the GOP just when it is returning to power, as there is no obvious alternative to Johnson.
“I think it’s right for members to at least question whether the leadership we have going forward is appropriate and adequate with this presidency,” Perry told Fox Business. “I like Mike. It’s not personal. It’s business. But we’ve got to make sure that we can get the Trump agenda done. And these members are signaling that they don’t know that they have the confidence in Mike to do that based on past performance.”
