Bill Courtright

Bill Courtright will be the next mayor of the city of Scranton.

Courtright, the Democratic nominee and the city’s Tax Collector, faced off against Republican nominee James Mulligan Jr.

“We’ve got to fix this city,” said Courtright. “You know I’m humbled that the people of this city have once again voted for me and had the faith and trust in me and I’m thankful for that.”

“You know, our campaign was about one Scranton and tonight the people of Scranton have spoken,”Mulligan said in his concession speech. “Mr. Courtright is now going to be mayor-elect Courtright and we need to respect that and we need to get behind Mr. Courtright and whatever his plan is for the city, we need to step up and support him to make sure that Scranton is on the right track. Look, we’ve had our differences, we’ve debated them. The people of Scranton have spoken. I’ve accepted that, I’m comfortable with that.”

With 144 of the 163 precincts reporting, Courtright is leading Mulligan 57%-43%. Courtright so far has 7,646 votes to Mulligan’s 5,866.

Pittston Magisterial

Meanwhile, in the race for Pittston Area Magistrate Democrat Alexandra Kokura has defeated Republican Girard Mecadon. Mecadon has already conceded the race to Kokura.

Currently Kokura holds a 508 vote lead.

PoliticsPA named this one of the top 13 races this year, in large part because of the nasty, classically NEPA nature of the race.

The district covers parts of or all of Avoca, Dupont, Duryea, Hughestown, Jenkins Township, Pittston City, Pittston Township and Yatesville.
