The results are in, and former Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper has unseated incumbent Erie County Executive Barry Grossman in the Democratic primary 52% to 48%.

Grossman called Dahlkemper to concede around 10 p.m. according to an Erie-Times News reporter.

Dahlkemper was the U.S. Representative for the 3rd district for one term, winning in the Democratic wave year of 2008 and losing in the GOP wave year of 2010. She flirted with a potential gubernatorial campaign but ruled it out earlier this year in her candidacy announcement for Erie’s top executive position. She campaigned on improving Erie County’s 8.2% unemployment rate and keeping young people in the county.

Grossman, the former lawyer and political science professor, assumed office in 2010 after defeating an incumbent himself. The need for a community college dominated his platform in the 2009 primary, a project with never came to fruition. The incumbent ran on a government reform platform this time around, proposing term limits for county politicians and closing tax loopholes.

Dahlkemper is a favorite against Republican Don Tucci who also won his primary tonight.

  1. I find it fascinating that someone with no relevant experience/ demonstrated success or that would barely meet the minimum qualifications for a similar position in the private sector, can potentially be elected to that position in the public sector. It illustrates the serious flaws in the process. What possessed the voters to think that Kathy Dahlkemper is qualified to be a County Executive is beyond me. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that two abysmal years as in Congress makes her a suitable candidate for this job – it doesn’t. Shame on her for deceiving the voters.

  2. As a citizen of Erie County, I can say I will certainly NOT vote for Kathy in the fall. Worthless politician.
