Daughtery, Stilp Win Congressional Primaries

Democrat Gene Stilp overcame Wilkes-Barre attorney, Bill Vinsko, in Pennsylvania’s 11th Congressional District’s Democratic Primary today.

According to the Pennsylvania Election Returns,  Stilp won 54.6 percent, 18,604 votes. Vinsko received 45.4 percent, 15,462 votes.

The 11th District, recently redrawn, contains nine counties which include Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry.

Stilp, a political activist, will face Republican incumbent U.S. Representative Lou Barletta in the general election this fall.

Democrat Rick Daugherty was also victorious over opponent Jackson Eaton in the primary for the 15th Congressional District.

According to the Pennsylvania Election Returns, Daugherty won 58.7 percent with 14,746 votes. Eaton received 41.3 percent with 10,381 votes.

Eaton, the DCCC’s pick, had raised over $100K for the race against Daugherty.
Daugherty had only raised $8K.

The Express-Times quotes Eaton, saying “today was not a good day for my campaign, but today is a great day for the Democratic party.”

Eaton continued, “and that is because the people in the Democratic party and people across the 15th District realize that Congressman Dent can and will be beaten this fall.”

Giving Daugherty his vote of confidence, Eaton concluded that Daugherty “can and will beat Congressman Dent.”

Daugherty, the Lehigh County Democratic Committee chairman, will go head-to-head against U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent in the general election this fall.

  1. PA 11th District Congressional Candidate Gene Stilp (D) is running a unique campaign on a shoestring budget against incumbent Republican Lou Barletta. The redistricting by the Republicans in Pennsylvania has actually helping Stilp’s efforts.

  2. I don’t know what it’s going to take to get the DCCC to realize they are missing a great opportunity with Stilp. If they put just a little money and support behind him, he’ll take the seat from Barletta.
Hell, he might just do it without their support. Then they’ll have egg on their faces.

    Wake up DCCC!

  3. The national Dems should take this race seriously. Stilp will get Republican votes in the areas that know him. He came extremely close to beat Helm in the 104th state house race in 2010 in a year where Republicans won by historic margins.
