DCCC Targets Meehan, Fitzpatrick with Online Ads

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is using new online ads to accuse Congressmen Pat Meehan (R-Delaware) and Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Bucks) of being open to another shutdown.

The federal budget deadline is 60 days away, and the congressional debate is far from resolved. The DCCC is funneling money into paid ads on Facebook in Fitzpatrick and Meehan’s districts to pressure them into supporting a budget before the government is forced to shut down yet again.

These two Pennsylvanians aren’t alone, the DCCC is targeting 31 House Republicans throughout the country.

“Congressman Meehan and House Republicans still haven’t passed a budget that gives up on their irresponsible demand to defund the Affordable Care Act, which could cause yet another shutdown,” said Emily Bittner of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “When will they give up their Tea Party demands and back a commonsense budget that takes a balanced approach to our finances?”

Fitzpatrick and Meehan were two of the minority of Republicans who supported the vote to end the last shutdown in mid-October. Typically, announcements like the DCCC’s are intended at least as much to garner media attention as they are meant influence voters.

The DCCC’s nemesis, National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) swung back. Hard.

“It looks like the folks at the DCCC haven’t changed their calendars from October to November, but maybe that’s so they can wilfully ignore what has been a disastrous month for Democrats,” NRCC Regional Press Secretary Ian Prior told PoliticsPA. “While they are having fun with tone-deaf Facebook ads, millions are losing their health care plans because of Obamacare.”

NRCC makes a fair point. According to a Quinnipiac poll released today, Democrats have lost their 9 point approval edge since last month and now tie Republicans in Congress.

  1. What a stupid waste of time and money. Do children run the DCCC? It’s like they had money to burn and just manufactured an issue. I realize the shutdown worked in their favor and they are trying to turn the tide with all the anti-Obamacare news reports. But to counter with a Facebook ad is about the dumbest thing I think I’ve heard.

  2. The irony of all ironies was that the shutdown occurred over whether to delay Obamacare for a year. A delay that even Democrats are starting to call for just weeks after opposing a delay that would end the shutdown.
