Dem AG Candidates Team Up for Boockvar

By Keegan Gibson, Managing Editor

Three Democrats with their eye on the Attorney General’s office are putting first things first: Kathy Boockvar, their party’s 2011 candidate for Commonwealth Court.

According to an invitation forwarded to PoliticsPA, former Lackawanna County assistant District Attorney Kathleen Kane, former Philadelphia assistant DA Dan McCaffery and former Congressman Patrick Murphy are joining forces to co-host a Philadelphia fundraiser for Boockvar.

The $250-per-person event is scheduled for August 3rd at the Comcast Center, and also features former Philly Controller and LG candidate Jonathan Saidel.

Boockvar, a Bucks County attorney, leads her Republican opponent Anne Covey (also a Bucks County attorney) in the fundraising race. As of the most recent campaign finance filings reported by the Legal Intelligencer, Boockvar raised about $95,000 while Covey had raised about $56,000. Boockvar is also ahead of both Superior Court candidates in fundraising.

“Kathy Boockvar is a long time friend. She asked if I would co-host an event with Kathleen and Pat and I was happy to lend my support,” said McCaffery. “I have supported great candidates for public office for my entire career and I can’t think of a better person for the job. Kathy is an excellent attorney. Bright. Committed. Honest as the day is long and eminently qualified for the position she is seeking. I know a thing or two about outstanding appellate judges and can tell you first hand that Kathy will be an excellent addition to the Commonwealth Court.”

McCaffery also dismissed rumors than he may have reconsidered his decision to run.

“My decision to enter the race is made. I have simply delayed my announcement. I have spent the past week in western Pa  lining up support and endorsements,” he said. “The encouragement and support I am receiving has been overwhelming. I am energized and looking forward to the campaign.”

Update, 5:15pm: Statements from Patrick Murphy and Kathleen Kane

“Kathy is a friend and someone I truly admire, which is why I’ve been in her corner since day one,” said Murphy, Boockvar’s fellow Bucks County Democrat. “She has spent her entire career fighting for working families across Pennsylvania and she is going to serve with honor and distinction on the Commonwealth Court. Her race is a perfect example of why we can’t overlook the 2011 elections.”

“I met Kathy for the first time in Scranton on St. Patrick’s Day.  She immediately struck me as genuine and real,” said Kane.  “We shared stories on kids and campaigning. I’ve spent most of my career in court before judges and I can tell you that Kathy has the temperament, intelligence and judgment to well serve the public in the Commonwealth Court.  I am honored to be co-hosting the event.”

  1. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. It is a long way away, but Murph definitely is out in front. Probably has the best chance to win, but it is still up the in air.

  2. What endorsements has McCaffery lined up?

I just don’t see him actually winning. He could make things more complicated for Murphy… but who actually wants to see that? It’ll be Rafferty for the GOP, and Murphy has the strength to take him.

Maybe Kane could pull out the primary, but she is a weak general election candidate… very weak.

  3. I’d say McCafferey is the frontrunner to win the Dem primary given his name ID statewide thanks to his brother’s previous successful runs, and his being a former DA definitely also helps in a race for AG. So if he runs then I’d say he’s the frontrunner. But the question is does McCaffery have the balls to run? I’ve heard mixed things.
