Dems Trounce in Philly DA and Controller Races

Both incumbent district attorney Seth Williams and incumbent controller Alan Butkovitz get to keep their seats next term after each won solidly over their Republican challengers by more than 60 percent.

Controller

Alan Butkovitz, who has served as city controller since 2005, is a former member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and is rumored to be considering a 2015 mayoral bid.

During a debate between Butkovitz and challenger Terrence Tracy, Butkovitz said he wasn’t sure whether or not he would finish his term as controller – a clear reference to the fact that he is considering a bid for Mayor in 2015.

“Right now I don’t know how that will go,” Butkovitz said. “You can’t count on me necessarily finishing the term, but there’s a lot to be decided.”

Butkovitz beat out Tracy, a Republican, 82 to 18 percent, with 95 percent of precincts reporting.

District Attorney

In the district attorney’s race, Williams squared off against Daniel Alvarez, a former assistant district attorney. Despite having a stronghold in the Democratic city of Philadelphia, Alvarez underwent criticism earlier in the campaign for mismanagement of the DA’s office.

Williams beat Alvarez solidly 81 percent to 19 percent, with 95 percent of precincts reporting.

Even though the odds were against him, Alvarez fought back against Williams — strong arming him into a debate by cornering him in a diner.

Alvarez received just under 20 percent of the vote, showing him as a voice and a potential force for the Philadelphia GOP moving forward.

  1. Agreed, same situation in Reading. Dem GOTV might have helped elect second Democrat candidate to Court of Common Pleas and helped with Superior Court race. That probably did not matter to the soon to be out County Chair, what a shame.
