Denlinger Considers an LG Bid

Former State Representative Gordon Denlinger (R-Lancaster) is considering a run for Lieutenant Governor next year, viewing himself as a Mike Pence style addition to a ticket.

“Though I have worked over 20 years in the private sector, my 12 years in the state House have brought me significant connections that will help advance the agenda of our next Governor,” Denlinger said in an interview with PoliticsPA.

Denlinger sees his connections in the evangelical community being a bridge for a gubernatorial candidate to be able to tap into their support, much like Pence did for Trump in the 2016 election.

While Lieutenant Governor candidates do not usually take strong positions on issues head of the election as they have to run as a ticket during the fall with the gubernatorial candidate, Denlinger has taken an issue on the expense of the office he is considering

“I do think there is a role for the Lieutenant Governor in the state, but I am not sure why we are the only state in the union that needs to have a mansion for the Lieutenant Governor,” Denlinger said.

“A lavish lifestyle and big staff are not needed. I would seek to bring serious reductions in expense to the office, and we could start by getting rid of the mansion.”

Denlinger served in the state House for 12 years, first being elected in 2002. He was most recently an elected delegate to the 2016 Republican National Convention. Since leaving office, he has returned to the private sector.

Denlinger is looking at a mid-December timeline for a final decision on whether he will run for the office. He has formed an exploratory committee that is reaching out to state party members, and Republican activists across the state to gauge the support he would have before making a final decision.

State Senator David Argall (R-Schuylkill) is also reportedly considering a bid for the office.

  1. Mike Pence is his role model??? Talk about modest expectations! Who cares about his candidacy?

  2. Gordon would still be in the House if he had played his hand correctly. It was a job for life. I cannot blame him for running for higher office though, if he had been elected he would have had to run only every four years.Seems to be following the route of his brother-in-law.

  3. Honestly he’s be a good fit for the job. Provide a needed calm and balance to Wagner, Ellsworth, or Mango.

I see a regional and ideological argument.

  4. Lt. Gov. is an unnecessary position and needs to be eliminated to save taxpayer dollars. Laws should be changed to make some cabinet level secretary next in line should the governor die or be unable to continue in office. Secretary of State would be an obvious choice.

    1. I suppose that’s one thing to like about this dude, as he claims to want to scale the whole thing back a bit. Whether or not that would happen or not remains to be seen. But I agree, does the LG need a mansion?

      1. I have been there and it is NOT a mansion! The place is on the fringe of Indiantown Gap. The neighbors are officers at the Gap. There was a very good reason at the time why this house was established for the Lt. Gov. The current occupant may not be the most desirable, but why get rid of the house or the office because of this one individual? I would begin to cut back the perks of the 253 lawmakers.

  5. “viewing himself as a Mike Pence style addition to a ticket”

So, a toady who will engage in false outrage and leave sporting events?

  6. I will support him when he runs for Lieutenant Governor in 2018 because he will win both the primary and the general election.
