Republican gubernatorial nominee Tom Corbett says a portion of Pennsylvania’s 591,000 workers without jobs are choosing to stay unemployed.

During a door-to-door tour of Elizabethtown, Lancaster County businesses today, Corbett said “the jobs are there,” but that many people are purposely remaining unemployed, in order to collect benefits. He says he’s heard this from business owners across Pennsylvania. “One of the issues, and I hear it repeatedly – one of the individuals said, ‘I can’t get workers. People don’t want to come back to work while they still have unemployment.’’ He said.  “They’re literally telling him, ‘I’ll come back to work when unemployment runs out.’ That’s becoming a problem.”

Corbett added, “The jobs are there. But if we keep extending unemployment, people are going to sit there and – I’ve literally had construction companies tell me, I can’t get people to come back to work until…they say, I’ll come back to work when unemployment runs out.”

  1. My wife could only find part time work and she was lucky to get that. Now her unemployment has expired and we are struggling. Corbett has no idea what he is talking about. Her job only gives her 30 hours every two weeks. She still looks for a full time job but there are none out there.

  2. Is he serious If I knew where there were jobs I would apply. I keep detailed journals of my job search I am 40yrs old with two kids. I worked all my life from the age 16 never received any form of assistance. 15 years I worked two jobs now I have none both companies I worked for went out of business. Does Mr. Corbett really thinks I want to stay home depressed and miserable. If he has a job for me I would gladly take it.

  3. Corbett is an idiot. There are too many people – myself included – that would rather be working and supporting our families with a REAL job (not having to shamefully tell people we’re unemployed). I wouldn’t doubt that this ’employer’ he speaks of is completely fabricated. He is a Republican, after all.
