Dickinson To Challenge Doyle in PA18 Dem Primary

Jerry Dickinson, a law professor at the University of Pittsburgh, announced his intentions to seek the Democratic nomination for the 18th Congressional District. He will face Rep. Michael Doyle (D-Allegheny), who has represented the area since 1995, in the Democratic primary.

The 32 year-old Shaler Township native declared his bid on social media yesterday along with an in-depth interview with PublicSource.

“We’re talking about stagnant economic mobility, we’re talking about exorbitant healthcare costs, we’re talking about a failed criminal justice system, skyrocketing housing prices,” Dickinson said to PublicSource. “I mean, these are all things that are just continuing over and over again, and it’s time for a change. It’s time for a generational change. It’s time for new leadership. It’s time for a new voice.”

On his campaign website, Dickinson places economic mobility, workers’ rights, healthcare-for-all, and criminal justice at the forefront of his campaign, while also dedicating a section to “block Trump’s Wall”. In 2017, Dickinson provided expert testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs and Homeland Security against President Donald Trump’s border wall Executive Order.

In an interview with PublicSource, Dickinson said he identifies as a progressive, with the article writing it is “safe to say” he is “challenging Doyle from the left.”

Doyle has faced a primary challenger in the past four elections. He’s bested Janis Brooks in the Democratic primary each time by a wide margin. Doyle ran unopposed in November for his most recent re-election bid.

Doyle’s campaign did not immediately respond for comment.

Yea. Who cares about the destructive policy proposals. As long as he’s not “in the pocket” of a major employer who you disagree with on internet regulations. Sounds reasonable.
