DLCC Unveils 2024 Roadmap in “The Year of the States”

Calling it the most consequential year for state politics and state legislatures in history, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) unveiled its “2024 roadmap” that outlines its priorities, fundraising and targets for the coming election cycle.

The goal of the DLCC has been to lead the fight to hold and flip state legislatures for Democrats across the country. With the tagline, “The Year of the States,” the committee announced a target $60 million budget early last year to achieve its goals and it is off to a strong start.

“The DLCC has raised over $21 million so far this cycle, a record amount for our organization and we experienced four consecutive quarters of growth, despite negative industry trends affecting many of our peer organizations,” said DLCC President Heather Williams in a press release. “With newfound attention on this level of the ballot, the DLCC plans to harness this energy and execute our roadmap strategy laid out in this memo.”

The DLCC has Pennsylvania in the memo as one of its most important states. It hopes to protect the Democratic majority in the State House which currently stands at 101-101 with a special election coming next month. The committee also sees an opportunity to flip the Pennsylvania Senate that Republicans hold a 28-22 majority.

The memo reads, “The Pennsylvania House’s one-seat Democratic majority has been successfully defended by the DLCC in 5 special elections so far. There will be another important special election to fill a Democratic vacancy on February 13, with control of the Pennsylvania House once again up for grabs. This seat will be a top priority for the DLCC as the chamber’s majority hangs in the balance.

“All politics is local, and the level of the ballot that impacts daily lives the most is the one closest to our communities,” the memo continues. “With that being said, we plan on supporting our caucuses and messaging for key moments during the legislative sessions—most of which start between January and early February. We will be a resource highlighting the dangerous proposals introduced by Republicans in state legislatures, and contrasting that with the important progress that Democratic majorities accomplish for their communities.”

Other battleground states identified by the DLCC include Arizona, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

“2024 is the year of the states and the DLCC is proud to unveil our roadmap to ensuring Democrats win back power at the state legislative level,” said Williams. “With this unprecedented transparency, we’re all hands on deck to continue our unprecedented growth as we start the 2024 election cycle.”
