DNC Will Accept PAC, Lobbyist Money for 2016 Philly Convention

philadelphiaThe 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia will, in John Hammond’s immortal words, spare no expense.

According to Maggie Haberman of the New York Times, the DNC will be accepting PAC money and personal donations from lobbyists. The new rule will concern efforts to raise cash for the Philly convention next year and any joint fundraising efforts between the party and its presidential nominee.

This change is the latest indication that as President Obama winds down his time in the White House, the Clintons’ are returning to power in the party.

Barack Obama always pledged to avoid this type of fundraising during his campaigns, putting an ideological stand ahead of building the party infrastructure.

Hillary Clinton (the front-runner for the 2016 nomination) and former President Bill Clinton, on the other hand, have always preferred building the party through whatever means necessary.

Both methods have caused their share of problems.

Way back in 1996, a scandal erupted when it was found Chinese donors were funneling money to the Democratic Party. Conversely, the party found it difficult to fund their 2012 convention thanks to the Obama team’s restrictions.

As for the city of Philadelphia, this news means the festivities of July 25th to 28th won’t lack for funds.

  1. Just in time for the Rendell-associated players to force out current PA Dems chairman. Coincidence?

  2. How exactly does spending a boatload of money for the national convention “build the party?”
