The most powerful labor man in the City of Brother Love just expanded his purview.
In addition to serving as Business Manager of IBEW 98, John “Johnny Doc” Dougherty will soon lead another labor union based in Philadelphia.
According to Chris Brennan of the Inquirer, Johnny Doc will take over as Business Manager of the Philadelphia Building and Construction Trades Council.
The Council represents 115 local unions from 15 different organizations.
Incumbent, and Dougherty mentor, Pat Gillespie is handing over the reins on December 1st.
“John is tremendously suited for the challenges that confront the building trades council,” Gillespie stated. “I know he’ll do an outstanding job.”
“It’s personal,” Dougherty told Brennan of taking over for Gillespie. “It’s like a family thing.”
Dougherty is one of the most powerful political forces in Philadelphia and as a result, he is highly respected and reviled. This new position will likely heighten his influence and his profile.

He’ll do a great job just don’t let his racist views come out like we know they can Heaven help us all
John Dougherty will do a great job for all working people in the Philadelphia region. He fights for good paying jobs that are safe and secure and he has the energy and ability to help our middle class.
