For those looking for an update from my story this morning on Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s attempt to block the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases, it failed this afternoon, as the Alaska Republican was able to peel off only six Democrats to vote for the measure along with the entire 41-seat Republican caucus.

Pennsylvania’s Bob Casey and Arlen Specter, as expected, voted against the measure, though environmental types are worried that Casey and Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., will put up a proposal that would block EPA from regulating smaller emitters and farmers. Now that the bill is defeated, they say, there’s no need. Casey told me Wednesday that he would only put out a compromise bill if it was necessary to peel off some of Murkowski’s votes. Did he strike such a deal? We’ll have to wait and see.
