Some folks have questioned why PoliticsPA gave former Senator Rick Santorum an up arrow in this week’s Ups and Downs. Well, we told you so.
We wrote today:
“Santorum’s focus is on winning a GOP primary, and equating Roe v. Wade to the Dred Scott case is fairly mainstream pro-life thinking. Ultimately, any time anyone talks about Santorum it’s a good thing for him.”
Time Magazine’s Joe Klein brings the point home, in an op-ed today:
“I disagree with Rick Santorum on almost everything, including abortion. But this recent kerfuffle about the former Pennsylvania Senator’s remarks about black people, including the President, and abortion is a classic example of political correctness run amok. Indeed, there is an internal logic to Santorum’s remarks that represents the exact opposite of racism.”
“Those who would describe his argument as racist are either purposely trying to distort what he said or they don’t know what they’re talking about.”
And how did PoliticsPA notice this op-ed? It was mentioned just now on Fox News, where Rick Santorum appeared as a guest. And rather than apologizing for a so-called gaffe, he was channeling the righteous indignation of the pro-life cause.
The fact is, Santorum is getting national attention for these comments – the kind that he will need if he is to stand a chance against more famous GOP presidential prospects. And while PoliticsPA has not seen specific polling data about the degree to which the pro-life and the Tea Party movements overlap, we suspect it is a lot.
Santorum is enjoying all the political benefits of being a target of the “lame-stream media,” AND he’s get credited with having a sincere and intellectually coherent argument. Talk about a win-win.
Santorum is not just an Up in the narrow scope of PA politics. He had the best week of any of the prospective GOP presidential candidates.

By the way, Is “Not Buying” talking about Obama or Santorum when he refers to “Desperate Idealoges” being horrible presidents. He cannot be worse than the current “Desperate Idealogue” in the Oval Office. PS – Its about the ecomomy – stupid!
Santorums desparate attempt to play a Southern Strategy on a ridicoulously convoluted argument is just that, desparation. He has the exact opposite views on Gays. So his argument is disingeuous at best and deeply cynical with a dog whistle to the KKK wing of the Republican Party to boot…. desparate idelogues make horrible Presidents.
