Editorial Urges PA Legislators to Support 9/11 Responders

9-11-towers-of-lightAs rescue workers poured into the fiery World Trade Center buildings in order to save those trapped inside, toxins poured into their bodies. Since that fateful day, lawmakers have tried to ensure those brave men and women get the care and attention they deserve.

In 2011, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was passed. This program ensures that those who were affected by the tragedy of 9/11 receive monitoring and treatment services for health problems that occurred because of that disaster.

This program, however, will expire at the end of 2016 if it is not renewed.

The New York Daily News has published an editorial urging the lawmakers who represent Pennsylvania on Capitol Hill to understand the necessity of this program and sign on.

While every member of the House and Senate of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are supporting the Act’s renewal, only two federal Pennsylvania legislators are onboard: Republican Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick and Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.

“There are 1,044 Pennsylvanians registered in the program,” commented the NY Daily News. “On Wednesday, two of these heroes will be on Capitol Hill, asking their slumbering lawmakers to wake up.”

Scott Chernoff, a retired NYPD police officer living in Bethlehem and Laura DiPasqua-Grappy, an American Red Cross worker from Erie are the two Pennsylvanians who will be traveling to DC to support this program.
