Election Recap Ups & Downs

Female candidates have a big night across the state, Mundy gets the most votes, southeast Pa. Dems have a big election night, the Philly Board of Elections forgets a candidate’s name, and cash doesn’t mean what it used to.  See who made this week’s Ups & Downs!

Up-Arrow4-2

Female Candidates.  Female candidates swept all seven statewide races this year.  The candidates were from both political parties, and some raised and spent hundreds of thousands of dollars, while others barely raised and spent any money at all.  Local female candidates also saw success in the election, including EmergePA which went eight for eight in local races.

Up-Arrow4-2

Sallie Mundy.  Supreme Court Justice Sallie Mundy was the top vote-getter of all the statewide candidates this year.

Down Arrow Philadelphia Board of Elections.  On half of the Philadelphia precincts ballots the board did not print Commonwealth Court candidate Judge Christine Fizzano Cannon’s full name, instead listing her has Judge Christine Fizzano.  While Fizzano Cannon did end up winning, the mistake will continue Republican talking points of the city being against Republican candidates.

Up-Arrow4-2 Delco & Chester Dems.  Delaware and Chester county Democrats saw historic election nights.  Delaware county Dems won seats on the county council for the first time since the Home Rule Charter was passed, and Chester county Democrats not only elected its first Democratic row officer ever, it swept the row offices this year.

Down Arrow

Allentown Voters.  Allentown voters re-elected Mayor Ed Pawlowski to a fourth term in office, while he is facing a 54 count federal indictment for corruption.

Down Arrow Cash.  Especially in the Commonwealth Court elections, cash was not the main determining factor for who would win the race.  Republican Paul Lalley outraised Democratic Judge Ellen Ceisler by at least $200,000, a large amount for a judicial race, but was unable to turn that money into votes.

Up-Arrow4-2

HB/SB 76ers.  Supporters of the Senate and House bills that would remove the ability for local taxing authorities to collect property taxes were able to pass the constitutional amendment on the ballot that will allow for 100% of a home’s value to be exempted from property tax.

Down Arrow

Kim Bracey.  York Mayor Kim Bracey lost her re-election bid to Michael Helfrich, who was running as a Republican after losing to Bracey in the Primary.  The loss comes after Bracey received endorsements from Governor Tom Wolf and Senator Bob Casey.

  1. The Republicans will sweep all elections in Pennsylvania in 2018 and you can take that to the BankSS3

  2. Ok. Before we read the tea leaves searching for hidden and unknown reasons lets face facts about endorsements. They don’t mean anything except perhaps a touch of assistance with fundraising. That’s it, folks! I chuckled reading how the sky was falling in when so and so’s endorsed candidate didn’t win. Deep breath time. Breathe in. Breathe out. Repeat this phrase, “endorsements are meaningless.” Then you’ll feel better! Gotta love these political novices.

  3. Hopefully this election is a wake up call to the Delaware County Republican power brokers, no more hacks as candidates.

  4. Here is a Republican talking Point: We did absolutely nothing for Beth Grossman for Philadelphia DA. The first Republican candidate to have a prayer of a credible campaign in 20 years or so. The Republicans do not care about Philadelphia except to blast them in mail pieces in Western PA and the T.

    1. Beth Grossman was an outstanding candidate and a very easy sell from a Committee person’s standpoint. She rolled up 81% of the vote in my river wards’neighborhood. It is a shame that she got very little support from the state party. Now we have try to live with Larry Krasner for the next four years or move upstate where they still will be prosecuting “minor” property crimes and convicted felons for illegally possessing firearms.

  5. Is this referendum on Wolf – losing York’s Mayor Race and his appointed Judge Moulton? I think it is. Why didn’t he endorse Judge Woodruff? Too much money coming in from the Trial Lawyers who Mundy’s husband works for.
