In his attempt to convince voters to elect him to Pennsylvania’s highest court, Dougherty has enlisted a former leader of that body, retired Chief Justice Stephen Zappala Sr.
The former Chief Justice is not only supporting Dougherty, though, but also cutting a TV ad for him.
“I have the utmost respect for Chief Justice Zappala,” Dougherty responded. “His unprecedented endorsement and willingness to appear in a campaign commercial means the world to me. I’m honored and humbled by the Chief’s support.”
“This is the first time I have publicly endorsed anybody,” Zappala states at the beginning of the thirty-second spot entitled “Chief”.
Zappala goes on to praise Dougherty’s judicial experience and character.
“The Supreme Court needs a gentleman like Kevin Dougherty,” the former Chief Justice concludes.
Dougherty, who serves on Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas, is a Democratic nominee running for one of three open seats on the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court.

Getting an endorsement from Zappala is just as bad as getting an endorsement from Whitey Bulger, both are notorious mobsters.

Zappala is running for Attorney General; you do the math.
Pollster: Are you sure you are not confusing him with his DA son?
WECHT,DONOHUE,OLSON,
Pollster: Not nearly as mythical as Cyril Wecht.
This is too funny! Zappala never even met him!!
What a joke! Wonder how much Dougherty paid him. I heard Dougherty is in trouble in this race….a little birdie told me. He he he.
This development is BIG for Dougherty in the west – where he’s not as well known. Chief Justice Zappala remains an almost mythical figure in Allegheny County.
