Former Rep. Platts Elected to York County Court

Well, the third time was the charm for Todd Platts. Former Rep. Platts and Judge Mike Flannelly fought three times for this judicial seat, in both the Republican and Democratic primaries and today in the general election. In the end, Platts was able to secure the win with a 58%-42% margin of victory with all of the vote counted.

This race for a seat on the York County Court of Common Pleas was named by PoliticsPA as one of the 13 most interesting tonight. In essence, it was really a battle between two Republicans despite Flannelly winning the Democratic nomination. In an ironic twist, in fact, Flannelly was actually the more conservative of the two candidates.

Platts was the establishment candidate, as he served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2000 to 2012. Flannelly meanwhile was technically an incumbent after being appointed to the office after the death of Judge Chuck Patterson.
The victory of Platts, therefore, is also a victory for the establishment wing of the Pennsylvania Republican Party.

Finally, it will likely be sweet vindication for the former Congressman to serve on the court after York County Bar Association voted him unqualified for the office.

  2. Another case where a “career politician” ran a race only on his former credentials as a representative, not on his qualifications to serve on the court. He took this position away from a candidate who was clearly more qualified . People only voted for him because they recognized his name. Shame on you, Mr. Platts!
