Fox News: Trump Job Performance Approval at 44%

After 100 days into his second term, President Donald Trump is not viewed favorably by 5 of 9 respondents in the latest Fox News poll.

Only 44 percent of those surveyed said that they approved of Trump’s job performance over the first quarter, while 55% disapproved.

The president’s highest marks were achieved on border security with 55 percent signaling their approval, while a new-high of 47% approve of his handling of immigration.

On the flip side, a new low was reached on the economy with just 38% approving of his handiwork, while the numbers are the same or worse on inflation (33%), tariffs (33%), and taxes (38%).

The overall 44 percent total is down 5% from his March numbers which is 10% lower than former President Joe Biden at the same point of his term, and a point lower than Trump during his first term’s 100 days. As a point of reference, former presidents George W. Bush (63%) and Barack Obama (62%) both had the approval of more than 3-in-5 surveyed.

As a candidate, Trump ran on improving the economy but 71% of respondents rated economic conditions negatively and 55% say it is getting worse for their family. Those participating in the survey are also less optimistic about the future than they were at the beginning of term No. 2 with just 38% overall and 75% of Republicans feeling encouraged. In 2017, those numbers were 45% and 84%, respectively.

“As we’ve moved from one administration to another and the Trump administration tries to find its footing, many still see our leaders as unresponsive to their main concerns,” says Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who conducts Fox New surveys with Democrat Chris Anderson. “Partisans have flipped, of course, so now it’s Democrats who are most worried, but many Independents and Republicans are also skeptical their economic fears are being addressed.”

“While Trump may feel he’s on favorable ground when arguing about immigration with Democrats, there are obvious risks to pushing it too far,” says Anderson. “One risk is he is seen as doing it at the expense of economic issues, which concern voters more than immigration. Another is in ignoring the courts and losing supporters who see value in checks and balances.”

Other findings included that 85% of respondents overall say they are still satisfied with their vote for president, while 42% approve of the job that JD Vance is doing as vice president. Less than 2-in-5 (39%) approve of Elon Musk and his work with DOGE, while one-third believe divine intervention helped secure Trump’s return to the White House.

Conducted April 18-21, under the direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), this Fox News survey includes interviews with a sample of 1,104 registered voters randomly selected from a national voter file. Respondents spoke with live interviewers on landlines (127) and cellphones (703) or completed the survey online after receiving a text (274). Results based on the full sample have a margin of sampling error of ±3 percentage points. Sampling error for results among subgroups is higher. In addition to sampling error, question wording and order can influence results. Weights are generally applied to age, race, education and area variables to ensure the demographics are representative of the registered voter population. Sources for developing weight targets include the American Community Survey, Fox News Voter Analysis and voter file data.
