WASHINGTON — The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the leading non-governmental regulator of the U.S. securities industry, will host a free forum on Thursday, July 8, at The Woodlands Inn & Resort in Wilkes-Barre to help Pennsylvania families make smart investment decisions in today’s economic environment.
Special guest Congressman Paul Kanjorski (PA-11), a leader on the House Financial Services Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government Sponsored Enterprises, will join FINRA at the event to provide an overview of Congressional proposals to help protect investors and discuss the state of the broader economy. FINRA’s officials will share information on where to turn for objective guidance on investing and the actions FINRA is taking to educate and protect investors.
“During these tough economic times, families must carefully consider their investment options as they try to save for retirement, for a child’s education, or for a new home,” said Congressman Kanjorski.  “I have introduced strong legislation that will help to better protect investors and safeguard our economy in the future.  It was included in the House and Senate-passed Wall Street reform bills, and I am now working to ensure that it remains in the final negotiated legislation.  Among these reforms is a duty for all financial intermediaries to put the interest of investors first.  Our financial system has failed far too many investors for far too long and we must change course.  But, individuals must also educate themselves on their investment options.  The goal of this forum is to empower individuals to make the best possible investment choices for their circumstances.”
Congressman Kanjorski is one of just 16 core House conferees and 12 Senate conferees on the conference committee who are working to resolve the differences between the House and Senate versions of Wall Street reform bills and reach a final agreement on the historic legislation.
Joining Congressman Kanjorski will be two of the nation’s top experts on the securities industry – FINRA Chairman and CEO Rick Ketchum and Senior Vice President John Gannon – who will talk about who to listen to, what to listen for and why investors must do their homework before purchasing securities and investing their money.
“Financial literacy is vital for achieving long-term financial goals in an increasingly complex marketplace,” Ketchum said. “Events such as these help empower individuals and families to better prepare for retirement, save for children’s college education and reach a secure financial future.”
The forum will allow participants to share information about where to turn for objective guidance on investing in turbulent economic times. FINRA’s role in protecting and educating investors – and in assisting individual investors – will also be covered. Admission to the forum, which includes a complimentary buffet dinner, is free – but because space is limited, registration is strongly encouraged. Those who wish to register may do so online at www.finra.org/investorforum/wilkes-barre or by calling toll-free (877) 586-2737.
