Gearing Up? A Look At Kane’s Finance Report

AG Kane
AG Kane

2013 was a busy year for PA Attorney General Kathleen Kane in terms of fundraising: politician or not, she kept up with those who are running for office.

Her campaign finance reports shows that currently, Kane has $592,248 cash on hand. She also has a rollover from 2012 of $81,982.

All totaled, Kane raised $593,567 in 2013.

Many of her donors were unions, such as IBEW 98 with a donation of $20,000, the Carpenters PAC of Philadelphia with $15,000 and the Service Employees International Union with another $20K.

Most notably, a donor listed as Penn Business PAC contributed an eye-opening $50,000 to Kane’s finances.*

Not to be outdone, Kane’s individual donors gave it their all to support her in her future endeavors. Attorney Daniel Berger, of Berger & Montague, P.C. from Philadelphia, gave an impressive $25K. Richard Vague, one of the managing partners of Gabriel Investments from Philadelphia, also gave a generous $25K to Kane.

For her expenses, Kane used up $83,301 on a few different things. About $10K went to voter databases. Roughly another $10K went to fundraising, and $10K to political consulting and staff.

Interestingly, Kane received a $25K contribution from Pocono Garden Realty in October 2013. At the end of December, though, Kane returned their contribution in full.

Also, she has an outstanding $1.7 million debt to her husband Chris Kane, of Kane Is Able trucking company fame. He loaned her the money during the 2012 AG primary.

All of this fundraising Kane is getting herself into has set tongues wagging that she’s considering a bid for the Senate.* If this is the case, Kane may have to step up her game a bit to level out with the amounts Pennsylvania’s Senators have raised for Q4.

*Money raised for a Pa. state campaign committee may not be transferred into a federal account beyond $10,000 per year.

*This post initially stated that Penn PAC was affiliated with PennPAC, a nonprofit organization of the University of Pennsylvania. The two are not connected.

  1. “This is the US Senate, not some local board of supervisors. Politics aside, both parties’ candidates for the world’s most powerful legislative body should be the best and the brightest. They should own the track record to show the expertise and experience needed to best represent our commonwealth.”

This statement, especially the second sentence is truly the most hilarious comment without intending to be that I had thus far read in this forum. Since when was “best and brightest” a criteria for running for any office?

  2. Some of the posters on this forum sound like broken records and pretty soon will become irrelevant because no one will pay attention anymore. Are you listening, Joe?

  3. Joe-
You must have loved Papa Casey’s right-wing agenda against women’s reproductive rights. No surprise.

Joe, what is your job by the way? Wandering the streets, yelling at the wind?

  4. @David Diano:
Blinded by your disgusting arrogance and political ignorance, of course it is true you can’t take anyone seriously who opposes you. You get on these boards, yap up every traitor Democrat like everyone of them is a hero and for “the people” and dismiss the fact that Kane, Casey, and all of their other cohorts are a part of the problem. Kane is a political hack who is furthering the far left wing agendas of Bloomberg and Obama. She was financed by far and large out of NYC SSR to due to PA what Cuomo and Bloomberg have done to New York; Turning the police into an army of thuggish scum against people who exercise their second amendment rights, a State that has nearly 40% more people on govt. assistance than actually working, and the worst business environment in the country. Kane uses her position as the State-wide Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO) not to uphold the federal and state constitutions, but to do what she is told by the far left wing entities that she has back-door and dead of the night meetings with, like Bloomberg. Same with Bob Casey Jr. He has been a disgrace to this state and only got elected off of Obama’s jock and his Father’s name, with of course, the memories that people have of his dad being one of the finest governors in PA history. Since ’92, this state has stupidly cast its 20+ electoral votes for the democratic ticket because of idiots like you voting, and the fact that people from NJ and NY bring their filthy voting habits of Democrat Democrat Democrat down ticket voting, and the fact that we are, in PA, infected with illegal immigrants leeching off welfare. The JFK/ Eugene McCarthy Democrat party die a long time ago.

  5. RR-
The context of her statement was regarding leaving an elected post half-way through. Larry is paraphrasing (not even directly quoting) and making his claim out of context to create a new meaning.

  6. Joe-
    Can’t take you seriously.

    Reasonable Rep-
Besides Kane, Josh Shapiro or any of the top three Gov Primary vote getters would whip Sestak.

What “accomplishments” does one need to run for Senate? The purpose of the office is to enact legislation. She clearly has an understanding not only of the law, but it’s application and unintended consequences. For Democrats the important issue (beyond her being qualified) is that she will fight to defend our values. She has met this hurdle as well.

So, given ample evidence that she will make the right votes, Democrats should be happy to embrace her as our Senate candidate.

The day-to-day skill set in managing the AG office practically over-qualifies her to run a Senate office.

Sestak has proven he will vote the wrong-way on issues like Iraq (in defiance of his campaign promises), privacy and single-payer health care.

Also, Kane is just a decent human being looking out for the rights of the under-privileged, not the over-privileged. Exactly what we need.

  7. And sorry, but I have to interject on Larry’s behalf here. If Kane did indeed say, “I will not run for any other office while I am the AG,” then how can you possibly say that Larry’s interpretation has no basis in the the English language?  A literal reading of her quote would mean that, yes, she pledged not to run against Toomey or anyone else in 2016. Sure, you can argue that she didn’t mean what she said. But you cannot argue that suggesting otherwise has no basis in the English language, lol.

  8. David, let’s be serious. You’re principally on the Kane bandwagon because nobody else expected to run in 2016 has the political star power to deny Sestak the nomination. And Kane’s gotten her political star power through cheap populist press rather than any substantive accomplishments spanning her career in public and private life.

This is the US Senate, not some local board of supervisors. Politics aside, both parties’ candidates for the world’s most powerful legislative body should be the best and the brightest. They should own the track record to show the expertise and experience needed to best represent our commonwealth. Exactly what does Kane bring to the table?  She’s been a junior associate at a regional law firm and an assistant DA in a mid-sized county. Did she get a lot of exposure to macroeconomic theory, foreign diplomacy or immigration policy in those roles? Did she update the Facebook page there as well?

For argument’s sake, let’s concede that she’s doing a fine job as Attorney General (which in reality I do not; see http://tinyurl.com/SuthersWaPo). Attorney General should be an apolitical, state-level row office. The day-to-day responsibilities and the professional skill-set don’t really line up with that of a national legislator. Absent the relevant background and experience, why are so many Dems clamoring for Kane to be the next junior senator from PA? Because as a statewide office holder she’s more politically viable than the lesser known, but more qualified? Because her political views closely align with yours? Why?

I recall someone who didn’t have the background of an uber-qualified gubernatorial candidate, but he was nominated and elected anyway based exclusively on the political star power he got from cheap press as Attorney General. Four years later, it’s clear that he never had the pedigree to effectively carry out the job regardless of his political leanings. It’s ironic to see so many Democrats who can’t wait to boot Tom Corbett out of office simultaneously pushing Kathleen Kane for US Senate when her candidacy is so similarly flawed.

  9. @Democratic Woman:
Just because I don’t espouse the lines of the Communist Party USA, doesn’t make me a”misogynist” or a “bigot”. You’re like the filthy Soviet swine in North Korea. Kane and Casey are nothing more than Bloomberg stooges. Bloomberg is the little lapdog bitch for the U.N. and George Soros.
@David Diano: You don’t want me to sound like a “Bigot”, than stop humping and thumping Marx and Engels!! You’re like every other filthy pig democrat; SOVIET SWINE!

  10. Larry-
I was at her debates as well.
“she clearly said that she would not run for any other office while she was the AG”

This CLEARLY meant that she would not run for an office that would entail cutting short her term. Because the entire context was that Murphy was planning to run for Gov and wouldn’t complete the term. It did NOT mean that she couldn’t/wouldn’t/shouldn’t seek another office that started after completion of her elected term.

Your claims that it meant something else are just total BS and have no basis in fact or the English language.

Also, she hasn’t announced a run for Senate. Sestak’s been actively running (while denying running, while requesting donations) for the past 12 months. Democrats are looking for an alternative to Capt. “Wrong Way” Peachfuzz and would readily “draft” Kane to run if she doesn’t go for it herself.

If she does decided to run for another term as AG, the Dems will eagerly support her, and get behind PA’s other rising star: Josh Shapiro if he want to run.

Also, whoever comes in second in Dem Gov Primary may run for Senate.

2016 is going to be a huge turnout year for Dems.

  11. David, you are just plain wrong about her commitment not to run for another office. I was at the AG debate, and she clearly said that she would not run for any other office while she was the AG. It was not limited to Governor in any way.

  12. KingOfSpades-
First of all, the context of her not using the AG office as a springboard was SPECIFIC to running for an office like Gov that would entail her abandoning her full term. It did NOT preclude her from running for other offices. You have either misunderstood or willfully misinterpreted her statements. Promise made. Promise kept.
You made this same request for list of accomplishments two months ago. I repeat my answer:
    As for accomplishments:
    1) She stopped Corbett’s lottery privatization to a foreign company
    2) She has stood up for gay rights
    3) She’s been focused on doing the job of AG, like cracking down on child predators with the the newly created Child Predator Section in the attorney general’s office.
    4) The FB page for the AG’s office is filled with links and stories about the day-to-day types of work our AG does, be it testifying before congress about problems facing PA, or going after corrupt officials or prioritizing going after drug dealers.

    Democratic Woman-
Joe the bummer is just another anonymous bigot.

    Larry-
I call standing up for gay rights and letting gay people know she has their back protecting their constitutional rights to be: Doing her job!

    As for “average” intelligence:
    1) it would be a HUGE step up from her predecessor, Corbett
    2) it must have been very mentally intimidating to you

  13. Joe, calling women who step up and run for public office misogynistic, sexist names like ‘bitch’ and ‘witch’ and ‘honey girl’ is not even remotely witty. It’s disgusting.

Does anyone moderate this board? I come to PoliticsPA for good reporting and knowledgeable input from other readers, not to read 1950s-era slurs.

  14. Kane proves to us that you can buy anything in this country. The first best thing that happened to her was marrying a wealthy guy, she then used his money to buy the AG’s office. She has no track record from the DA’s office, she then refused to enforce Pa law, she consistently panders to the progressives. She is an opportunist. So on she goes to buy the next office. When I see the Kool aid drinker’s comments here it amazes me how dumb people can be.
She does have nice hair though.

  15. @David– Kane doesn’t pander?! What do you call the pep rally for the gay community that she held in Philadelphia? And that was based on very questionable legal authority. You reveal how willing you are to support any Democrat by cheering for Kane. She had no job for seven years before her husband bought her the AG’s Office. Having worked with her, I know that she is of very average intelligence. Nothing special. She is all about pandering and politics.

  16. @David Diano-

She specifically promised during her campaign for AG that she was not using the office as a springboard. Name three things that she’s actually gotten done since taking over. I have yet to see what makes her so great. Just like Obama, she’s all hype and substance,.

  17. Attorney General Kane will spend her first four years in office correcting the abuse of her predecessor. If she exposes the abuse and communicates the truth with the citizens, then the sky is the limit for any political ambitions. Best of luck General Kane!!!!

  18. Looks like Michael Bloombitch Bolshevik is ready to buy a Senate seat in 2016. Don’t worry PA voters, with Hillawitch in the WH, Bob Lackey jr. and Honey girl Kane will vote for every tax hike, property seizure, and VIOLENT GUN BAN that they are told to vote for.

  19. KingOfSpades-
You are so used to AG’s like Corbett abusing the office that you don’t know how a good AG works.

BTW, Kane can be an elected official without acting like a politician. She’s a professional not a panderer.

  20. I thought she was a prosecutor and not a politician…

Accomplishes nothing worth mentioning in one job and already gearing up to run for another. Seems to be the Democrat way after it worked so well for Obama.

  21. This restriction is irrelevant:
“*Money raised for a Pa. state campaign committee may not be transferred into a federal account beyond $10,000 per year.”

Kane can take the entire $592,248 cash on hand, and another $1.1 million in donations and pay back the outstanding debt to her husband.

Then, with the money back in their person account, she could spend/lend as much of it as she wants for a Senate race.

If she actually announce a run for Senate she would eclipse the already flagging Sestak.

The other oft-mention contender for this seat his Josh Shapiro. I haven’t seen his report, but I’ve heard he is slightly north of $900K. He could easily “return” donations to contributors, and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope (and donation form) for a Senate campaign. He would get a lot of it back.

My point is that either Kane or Shapiro would blow Sestak out of the water (naval reference, pun intended). They are both far more popular with the party and the voters, and are rising stars rather than sinking ships (naval #2).
