Governing Magazine: Kane a Pol to Watch

Governing Magazine has listed newly elected PA Attorney General Kathleen Kane as a State Official to Watch.

The magazine cites Kane’s historic and successful election, as well as her strong career as a prosecutor and the criticism of Tom Corbett’s handling of the Sandusky case, as reasons for recognition.4f8511165020f.preview-300

From the piece

“In 2012, Kane became the first woman in state history to be elected attorney general, as well as the first Democrat. A graduate of the University of Scranton and Temple University Law School, Kane was a prosecutor in Lackawanna County, Pa., chairing the county’s first insurance fraud task force and working on cases involving white-collar criminals, senior citizens and child abuse. Her experience in child abuse prosecutions lent credibility to her campaign for attorney general, which she began as an underdog against former U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy in the Democratic primary. As a candidate, Kane criticized former AG and GOP Gov. Tom Corbett for his handling of the three-year investigation into Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky. Corbett has been criticized for the slow pace of the investigation into Sandusky, who would later be convicted of repeated child sexual assaults. In the general election, Kane ended up with 56 percent of the vote, outpolling Obama, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey and every other statewide elected official. Her focus on Sandusky and Corbett could prove to be pivotal in the 2014 gubernatorial election.”

Kane has no plans to run in 2014, as her focus has been on the desire to finish out her term. However, the folks at Governing Magazine aren’t the only ones who recognize her  potential. Her name was generating buzz for Corbett’s seat even before she was elected.

  1. Her potential will be relaized when she investigates and prosecutes the bribes Corbett and his DEP minions have been taking to ignore the Gas Frackers’ crimes and misdeeds in stealing mineral rights and destroying our natural resources. There is NO denying how many millions Corporate Tom has taken publicly from the Frackers; all that remains to be exposed are the many back-room deals.

  2. She only won after not practicing law for over five years because it was a referendum on Corbett and her hubby had lots of money to finance her campaign. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here.

  3. RE: electedface the 647000 figure you cite is a lie and you know it. the actual figure is more like 18,000. and corbett assigned four investigators, not one. if you dont like corbett fine, but don’t use this case as a vehicle to criticize the one person who stopped sandusky. its despicable.

  4. As Attorney General, Tom Corbett received over $647,000 in campaign contributions from members of the Second Mile Foundation, while only assigning one investigator to the case.

Meanwhile, at the same time, he assigned 14 investigators to Bill Deweese and spent more than 5 years trying to get him.

It is difficult to believe these campaign contributions did not improperly influence his decision to not file charges against Jerry Sandusky.

The state police trooper who initially handled the Clinton County case against Jerry Sandusky believed there was enough evidence from a teenage boy — known as Victim One– to charge Sandusky with indecent assault.
