Hanger Makes Guv Bid Official

Former DEP Secretary John Hanger will run for Governor against Tom Corbett, his newly formed campaign announced Monday.

In a series of three stops, the Democrat will begin his candidacy on Wednesday. The first event will take place in Philadelphia, the second in Harrisburg, and the third on Thursday in Pittsburgh.

“John will travel by school bus between Philadelphia and Harrisburg to emphasize his commitment to public education and to all Pennsylvanians,” wrote spokeswoman Kathleen Daugherty.

PoliticsPA broke the news two weeks ago that Hanger, who served as Secretary of Environmental Protection from 2008 to 2011, was exploring a bid. Prior to that, he founded and lead the environmental group PennFuture – presently the largest eco-group in Pa. not to call for a moratorium on Marcellus shale gas drilling.

Since then, he created a website and announced a reception at Pennsylvania Society in December.

  1. WONT STAND A CHANCE, WRONG IDEALS FOR CURRENT STATUS OF SOCIETY IN PENNSYLVANIA, EIGHT YEARS FROM NOW HE WOULD WIN BY A LONG SHOT, PA IS NOT READY FOR MEDICAL MARIJUANA DESPITE WHAT THE POLLS SAY

  2. The early bird never catches the worm in campaigning. He is a tremendous long shot who needs visibility and a head start to attract donors. The smart money, however, will sit on the sideline until you hear Sestak, McCord decisions.

  3. He better hope Sestak and/or Casey won’t run in the primary (I don’t think Casey will, for what it’s worth, but Sestak is a very real possibility), or he’s toast before he even gets to the general.

  4. Seems odd to build a campaign on education funding when the state has increased it, while the federal stimulus dollars are what caused the funding cliff…

  5. Will this force Sestak’s and McCord’s hand? Will this make them officially launch their campaign now? When will he list his campaign contributions? Does this allow him to fund raise now? If so, those two guys better figure out if they are in or out. It is way to early to talk about momentum but this guy will have a jump on them.

  6. He is a class act that would make an excellent Governor. However, he makes way to much sense on the Marcellus Shale to ever have a prayer of winning the Democratic Primary.
