Harper Poll: Best Modern President

ronald_reaganHarper polling conducted their “Our Commonwealth” poll recently, surveying state residents as to who they believed was the best President of the Modern Era, given the choice between Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, or Ronald Reagan.

Despite the fact that the Democratic nominee has won Pennsylvania in the five most recent Presidential elections, 41% of respondents said they considered Ronald Reagan to be the greatest modern United States President.

Bill Clinton finished second with 28% of the vote, and Obama was third with 19%. Bush Sr. and Jr. received about equal share (5% and 4% respectively).

Reagan was the choice of both the Republicans and Independents polled, amassing 68% of the Republicans’ votes and 46% of the Independents’ votes.

Clinton leads Regan only among the 18-to-39 year-old age group, and he received 46% of Democrats’ vote compared to Obama’s 36%

Women are more than twice as likely to pick Obama as men, though Reagan led both genders.

Those in urban Philadelphia and the Southeast selected Obama as the best modern President, with 35% of the vote. Clinton and Reagan finished second and third in the region, at 29% and 25% respectively.

The sample size for the survey is 568 and the margin of error is +/- 4.11%. The Interactive Voice Response (IVR) automated telephone survey was conducted from June 25-26, 2014.

  1. Guess they’ve been dumb for a long time. In the 1980 and 1984 elections Pennsylvania voted overwhelmingly for Reagan.
    1980
    Carter 42% Reagan 49%
    1984
    Mondale 45% Reagan 53%

  2. Maybe it’s because Reagan is dead and hasn’t been able to say anything stupid for a decade. (Well, actually 2 decades since he revealed his Alzheimer’s, and dropped out of public life).

  3. How old were those polled? All of those listed in the top 4 were all elected since 1980. Most historians date the modern era begins with the election of FDR in 1932.

  4. There’s a lot of truth to this. But Jeb Bush was right when he doubted that today’s GOP would nominate either his father or Reagan. And conservatives would be shocked to learn that Ted Kennedy said Reagan did more for the Kennedy family than any President since his brother.

  5. A Nationally recognized Republican polling firm !!!!! LOL

So is fox– they made some real accurate 2012 Presidential predictions !!!LOL
