Democrat Christina Hartman is jumping in the race to challenge Congressman Lloyd Smucker for the second time. Hartman ran against Smucker in 2016.
“My decision today is about a job left unfinished. I’m running for Congress to protect the health care of millions of Americans, to embrace into our community those who are seeking refuge, and to stop Wall Street from preying on ordinary Americans for its own relentless greed,” Hartman said in a release announcing her bid.
Hartman ran against Smucker last year, losing by 10.87 points.
“I always finish what I start, and that is what this is about, finishing what I started last year,” Hartman said after her announcement.
Hartman thinks that the lessons she learned last year will help her next year. She will be doing more outreach to moderate Republicans.
Hartman will face Charles Klein, and John George in the Democratic primary.
Smucker’s campaign responded to Hartman’s announcement by touting his successes in Congress.
“Democrats are struggling to identify with normal folks, especially in Lancaster. Their primary winner will have their work cut out for them. Lloyd is focused on jobs and families. He’s already passed a bipartisan bill in the House focused on helping families adopt children in need. That type of early success is rare for a new Congressman. He will continue to work hard on behalf of the residents of the 16th District,” Campaign spokesman Mike Barley said in an email.

Districts in Lancaster are changing. Ours is trending blue. Hartman ran well in our district last time and will do better this time. She only needs one more vote for every 10 who voted and that can be done with better get out the vote. She’s right on issues. Smucker is wrong on issues and is afraid to hold town halls because he knows he’s not for the working men and women of Lancaster.
Hopefully your website becomes the first and best in the eyes of google search

Jess King is also running in the Democratic primary in the 16th. jesskingforcongress.com
She’s hot.
Failed challengers need to stop this and step aside. When is the last time someone ran for a seat like this, lost and then came back and won the next time around? What..maybe Toomey when Arlen Spector switched parties? ESPECIALLY just 2 years later. I have nothing against this challenger, I just don’t think it’s smart for the party.
Lou Barletta Lost 2002 & 2008 won 2010
Brendon Boyle (State House) Lost 2006, 2008, Won 2010
It’s an R+5 and we’ve already seen districts with greater Republican efficiency go 20+ points the other way. Unless conditions change dramatically, a moderate D has a real chance in 2018. Smucker’s vote to take health care away from tens of millions of Americans will hang around his neck.
“Take health care away”? Please stop with the hyperbolic talking points.
Signed,
Person who liked his/her plan but couldn’t keep his/her plan as promised.
The incumbent should be out of office in 2018, just like the inept and corrupt President that he supports. When you take out the trash, why leave a small clump in the corner?
I know of we need more women in congress but I do support the incumbent for his reelection bid for congress in 2018 and I will be writing him a letter to him in the next couple of days.
I don’t care what happens. She’s a democrat and won’t win in this area
Christina is already working with many moderate Republicans this time around. She has two former local GOP chairs advising her, they were key to the anti-Trump movement in Lancaster. Many people regret voting Trump.
That’s hilarious because those former GOP officials were sooooo successful in their anti-Trump efforts.
What’s different this time is that Lloyd Smucker voted to take away healthcare from thousands in the district. What’s different this time is that Lloyd Smucker is rubber stamping the Trump agenda that pays dividends for the reach and spits on everyday people. Christina Hartman will be an independent voice in Congress representing her constituents. That’s what’s different this time.
It was Obamacare that took my health insurance away from me, even though I was told I could keep my plan if I liked it.
I liked my plan too; but, my employer took that away from me.
Lloyd stands a better chance of losing his primary.
She worked hard in 16 but she’s not moderate enough for that district. When Pitts was in Congress he had one of the most conservative voting records of any congressman, think about that… She is too much Elizabeth Warren not enough Claire McCaskill
“She will be doing more outreach to moderate Republicans.”
Welp, she has no chance.
