Democrats can breathe easier tonight. They remain in the majority in the Pennsylvania State House.

Lindsay Powell, the Director of Workforce Strategies for InnovatePGH, defeated Republican challenger Erin Connolly Autenreith to win the special election in the 21st House District to keep Democrats in charge with a 102-101 majority.

The Associated Press called the race at 8:09 p.m., moments after the polls closed in the primarily Democratic district.

The 32-year-old will occupy the seat previously held by Democrat Sara Innamorato, who resigned to pursue the Allegheny County Executive position.

“This is not just about the 21st district,” said Powell at her victory celebration. “This is about the Commonwealth of PA. It’s about believing that we can do more (and that) government can be something that we are proud of. I promise you, every single day I will work to earn your trust.”

Powell, who previously worked at the City of Pittsburgh for five years as the Assistant Chief of Staff overseeing legislation and policy for city departments, has also worked at the federal level for progressive officials like U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“Freedom is on the line in statehouses across the country. Once again, voters rejected Pennsylvania Republicans’ radical policies, and for the fifth time this year, Democrats have won a crucial special election to hold the majority in the Pennsylvania House,” said Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee Interim President Heather Williams.
