Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto endorsed state Rep. Erin Molchany (D-Allegheny) in HD-36 — a race that has become highly competitive.
Molchany’s campaign put together an ad in honor of the endorsement that features the Mayor speaking highly of Molchany — whom he has known for many years.
“I met Erin Molchany a decade ago,” Peduto says, sporting a gray beard while sitting in a coffee shop. “She had just put herself through college at Duquesne [University] working at the Red Cross. She impressed me.”
The Mayor goes on to talk about Molchany’s credentials as a politician and as an advocate for progressive change.
“She worked with Planned Parenthood helping women get the health care that they need. She stood up for her values, Pittsburgh values, democratic values. It’s those values that she brings to Harrisburg — where she introduced Equal Pay legislation.”
Peduto’s endorsement is a huge one for Molchany. The newly elected Mayor has garnered plenty of support throughout the Pittsburgh region and his endorsement could help sway voters towards Molchany in the newly constructed HD-36.
Molchany is set to face off against longtime incumbent Rep. Harry Readshaw (D-Allegheny) in the Democratic primary set for later this month. The newly restructured HD-36 retains much more of Readshaw’s former voter base, which means that he is still seen as the frontrunner.
However, Molchany has run an aggressive campaign up until this point, and some of her former HD-22 area — which was moved to Lehigh County due to redistricting — now falls into the HD-36 boundaries.
And she has proven to be a champion of progressive ideals thus far in her short tenure in Harrisburg, which is why she is garnering the support of prominent Democrats like Mayor Peduto.
“I’m proud to have her on our team to build a new Pittsburgh. I am asking for your help to re-elect Erin Molchany,” Peduto says.

Does this one ad really show the candidate with three different hair colors? superficial, I know, but it doesn’t project confidence, consistency, and honesty.
He looks like he swallowed a penguin and half of the feathers remained on his face. Slob.
Um…L Bucci …
Since you’re not from Pittsburgh I guess you don’t know that it’s tradition for Penguins’ fans to grow a beard and not shave it during the Penguins’ run in the playoffs. Peduto is a huge hockey fan. In Pittsburgh, it HELPS that he supports the Penguins. Dimwit.
Go Molchany!
Pittsburgh elected that slob? This guy laid it all on the line for the Lena Dunham look-alike. I have to imagine unless they only play this ad during Portlandia re-runs, this hurts rather than helps.
Also, why the disproportionate coverage of Molchany and this race? Someone from politicspa hit up the Harrisburg bars with her?
