Could a fellow former sportscaster succeed the late state Rep. Sid Michaels Kavulich?
Mike Conigliaro, former WYOU-TV sportscaster and history teacher in Taylor, announced his bid for the Republican nomination for the special election in Pennsylvania’s 114th House District.
Conigliaro is the second GOP candidate to declare his intentions of seeking his party’s nomination, after Stephen Semenza announced his bid last month.
The special election to fill the seat of Kavulich, who died in October at the age of 62 from complications of open heart surgery, will be on March 12.
According to the Scranton Times-Tribune, Conigliaro plans on making education and fighting the opioid crisis his top priorities. Conigliaro worked alongside Kavulich at WYOU-TV and received the family’s blessing to succeed his former co-worker, the Times-Tribune reports.
The Republican Party of Lackawanna County is accepting applications for additional candidates for this seat until 4:00 p.m. on January 11, with more information at http://www.lackawannagop.com/.
The Times-Tribune reports that there are currently four Democrats looking to represent the 114th District: Bridget Malloy Kosierowski, Wendy Jones, Leonard Longo, and Rabbi Daniel Swartz. According to the Citizens Voice, the deadline for Democratic applications was this past Friday.
Kavulich represented the 114th district in Lackawanna County and served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives since 2011. He was a Democratic member of the following committees: Agriculture & Rural Affairs, Finance, Gaming Oversight, Local Government, and Tourism & Recreational Development.
