HD190: Movita Johnson-Harrell Cruises To Victory

To no surprise, Democrat Movita Johnson-Harrell wins the race for the open state House seat in West Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Magazine reports the race was called for Johnson-Harrell at 9:20 pm, with 58 of 80 precincts reporting. Johnson-Harrell captured 66 percent of the votes in a field of four candidates.

Johnson-Harrell becomes the first muslim woman elected to the Pennsylvania state House.

In a social media post stating her announcement for the seat, Johnson-Harrell detailed focusing on a number of quality of life issues if elected.

“I embrace the opportunity to unite the 190th while working to ensure our communities are safe, our children are educated and we have community re-investment to improve the quality of life for all constituents of the district,” she said.

The road to selecting their nominee was an interesting one for the Democratic Party. The party’s first two choices withdrew consideration after the Philadelphia Inquirer reported evidence questioning whether they were residents of the district.

It was also reported that Johnson-Harrell’s finances were discussed at length while selecting her, but it was determined that it was “nothing to preclude her from office” according to the Inquirer.

This seat was held by state Rep. Vanessa Lowery-Brown (D-Philadelphia) since 2009 until she resigned “under protest” in December after she was sentenced on a bribery conviction.

Johnson-Harrell, who most recently served as the supervisor of Victim/Witness Services and Restorative Justice at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, tried to unseat Brown in a six candidate field in the 2016 Democratic primary, but was unsuccessful.

The other nominees Johnson-Harrell defeated were Republican Michael Harvey, local committeeman, Amen Brown and Pastor Pam Williams, who ran as independents.
